Paul, I'm reasonably sure Mike Gage used a 57 on all the guitar tracks...I'll have to ask him but I think so. Might've been a room mic in the mix also. I had the head in the control room w/ me, and a Zbest in the booth, seems like I used Zane's 1012 cab some too. **edit**SM57 was the only mic for the amps/cabs. Any tweaking was done via mic preamp/compressor settings changes. Rik, that old guitar is a work in progress, it has one original '63 pickup left in the neck position, the other two are Seymour SSL-1's with a RWRP in the middle. Nothin' fancy, just good, baseline replacement strat pickups. I would also highly recommend Amalfitano or Aero pickups. Amalfitano are OEM in Lipe, Dean, and Glendale guitars, and Larry Pollack at Aero provides pickups for a line of instruments I'm sort of associated with (you saw 'em at the lake gig) as well as Fodera basses. Jerry is at www.amalfitanopickups.com and check out Larry at www.aeroinstrument.com

Hey, Mr. BW... Have you tried a Z amp thru a 4x12 cabinet? If so, which Z and what was the result? Thank you, sir. oldster

Well, Sir, I have played my MAZ Senior thru lots of backline supplied (usually) Marshall 4X12's, the current 75 watters that come stock in the 'standard' ones are not my favorites, too icepicky for me, but any port in a storm! The 'Vintage' labeled ones usually have the new greenbacks and generally sound better to me (as long as the back's on and there are 4 of 'em so they're not too 'mushy') We ran Da Skip's SRZ-65 thru a 4X12 at the studio a little on my CD too, but mostly thru my Zbest. Sounded great both ways! The little model 1936 or 1922 2X12's actually sound pretty good w/ the 75's, go figger. I had pretty good luck w/ my ol' Rx and a 'real' '58 'burst (on loan, of course) thru a Carvin 4X12 with Power That Be's knows WHAT kinda speakers were in....I think Doc still has the sound clip for 'Dead City' up on the Rx page, that was the rig. Back in about '97...

Thank you, sir. Another question if I may... I presume your amp is mic'ed for gigs. Is there any reason why you chose the Maz 38 Sr for your own use? Do you occasionally need the extra power or is it a tone thing? oldster

You are most welcome! A lotta times (especially on small local gigs at home), nothin's mic'ed but the kick drum, and the keyboards usually go direct, sometimes the 38 can be a bit much, depending on the room. So I usually have a ghia and a 2X10 or 1X12 on those gigs. But I like the extra headroom and the reverb of the 38 if the gig calls for it, but more and more I find myself trying to use less and less.

Buddy, Have you had any experience with G&L's? I've got a few of them, and was curious if you've ever run across any that you liked. I'm interested to see if you've ever played or heard any of the ASAT Specials. They have the large single coils that are supposed to be similar to P90's. I'd love a Lentz, but I can't swing that kind of money on a guitstick at the moment. Here's a link to G&L's website for a picture of it. Ya think it'd be a decent alternative to a Lentz? www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/guitars/asat-special/index.asp

I've never owned a G&L, but have played quite a few, and they are very well made instruments, they almost operate as a custom shop now, in that you can just call 'em, order what ya want and they'll build it for ya. Its not uncommon to find George or Leo's signature in the neck pocket on some of the old ones, I have a bud that has a black Broadcaster that has Leo's, how cool is that? I like those little ASAT Specials, and those 'Magnetic Field Design' pickups sound real good to me. You can almost always find a huge selection of pre-owned G&L's here: www.buffalobrosguitars.com/gAndL.htmlMay the force be witcha........

PS - I'm about to pm you about that cd.

Buddy, Have you any experience with the KT-45? Please share your opinions on this amp. BTW, I own a Carmen Ghia head w/ matching 1-12 cab (AlNiCo Silver Bell) and enjoy it. Respectfully, Eggman PS: Formerly of Dallas, but now enjoying life over in Bossier City!

Hey Frankie, good hearin' from ya, I have been enjoying all your vid clips, man they're killin'! I like the slide one w/ the little Stratotone. That is some deep, thick syrupy soulful sound, bruthamane! If I can get away with it in the room I'm playing, I 'druther' not have any any pedals inline (with the 38, anyway) except for a tuner. When the room calls for lower levels, I have an Analogman KoT and a Jauernig DGTM, as well as my trusty ol' beat up TS-9 w/ the $30 price tag still visible (take that, vintage pedal geeks!) I have been enjoying the Lizard Leg Flying Dragon w/ my ghia head thru a 2X10 convertible. (Thanks Steve!) It gooses the front end just enough, and I run the amp volume lower as a result, giving me a little more clean with the guitar volume backed off a little. The volume on the 38 is almost always all the way up, or nearly, and the Master is usually about halfway up, makes it easier to ride that guitar volume up and down for solos and fills.
Hi Eggman, I have indeed experienced a little carnal knowledge of the KT45 , most recently on the John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers album 'In the Palace of the King'. On 'I'm Goin' Down' it was a KT45 through an Eminence Swamp Thang, as well as some of the other tracks, although the MAZ Senior also figured prominently on that project. I was playing at Durty Nellie's in Palatine, IL once, flew into O'hare from Minneapolis and my guitars didn't make the trip with me. I had carried on my KT45 head, and the venue provided a recent Marshall 4X12 box with those 75 watt Celestions. I borrowed a nice old SG from my bud Dave Glatt, plugged 'er straight in and cranked it way up, those EL34's were blossoming and blooming every which way, and all was sonic nirvana until the inevitable audio police showed up, and even then I just really enjoyed myself with that rig. Doc calls the 45 his 'Twin' but that night it was a little like a Hiwatt w/ new output bottles, just clean pure sustain for days with just the right amount of 'edge' on it, and at appreciable decibel levels :^) If you ever find yourself at Shreveport Music, please give Mr. Don Teach my regahhhhds...

Hey Buddy, I keep hearing about your personal Maz settings but can't seem to find 'em on either the Jr. or Sr. section.
Could you post a link maybe or tell me where they are? Do they apply to both Jr. and Sr.?
Thanks much.

Buddy,
I understand that you've had alot of "time in the ring" with the Carmen Ghia. I adore my new Ghia (Previously I've played only Champs and Twins) and would like to hear what you've got to say about the Ghia.
Respectfully, Eggman

Ghia works well for me in the rooms where a 38 is too much, Most recently I've had good luck w/ Lentz Strat, HSL, or my old mutt strat>Flying Dragon>ghia>2X10 convertible. Sometimes I'll throw a Boss DD2 right behind my tuner for a little ambience, 'cause I LOVE just a smidge of 'space' in there, but as soon as you turn the guitar up, the FX level goes up with it, and it just ruins the natural tone of the amp for me. So I usually just use it on the clean stuff, old country tunes and lower volume r&b stuff. I have recorded a bit w/ the ghia also, although not as much as w/ the Senior, SRZ, KT45 or Rx. The solo on 'Pay The Band' on my CD is a ghia I believe, the rest of that track was Route 66 for the big ol' clean neck pickup tone.

Buddy,
You ever run your Ghia through a Z Best cab? I'm getting a Ghia in the next week or so but am not sure which cab to get with it. If I don't get the Z Best, I'd probably be looking at the 1x12 or maybe even the 2x10 convertible cabinet.
Thanks!

Buddy,
In '04 Dr. Z discontinued the 45 watt Prescription. Have you played the now defunct Prescription? If so, was it similar to the Stangray? Please share your impressions of the Prescription. Thanks, Eggman

Hello mguts, yep, I have run my ghia thru a Zbest quite a lot, Myles Rose has been very helpful in loaning me his ghia/Zbest or 2X10 on several occasions, and I have used that rig locally on some 'at home' gigs too. The key to using the ghia to great effect is having a good ensemble to play with that understand dynamics, its near perfect when you have a drummer that is listening to the band and not overpowering everybody on stage. More recently I have been using the 2X10 convertible, really like that one too and its a little more small gig friendly and easier on the old back at 2 am loadout. oldster, what I think is that I need to get the guy that updated my website to reword some of his copy (I repeat....HIS copy, not mine!) How embarraskin'. Frankie, thanks for those clips, I'm not familiar w/ that young gent's name or work, but you can bet I'll be woodsheddin' some of those scales and chords, always helps when you can see how its done by somebody that can do it! And left-handed, nonetheless. I love that style of playing, don't want to make it my life's work but sure would like to be familiar w/ some of that kind of technique, tone sausages notwithstanding. Paul, I was very impressed w/ the Ghia GT (as it was called at Zfest '09) I would really like to try it in an A/B situation with another amp (ghia? Rx/MAZ Jr w/ reverb?) for cleaner rhythm parts and kick the switch to get the grind for lead passages. Eggman, the original Rx is one of my favorites, I need to get the Deoxit out and spray all the pots in mine since it hasn't seen much use as of late, but you can hear it on the 'Dead City' clip by John MAyall from 'Blues For the Lost Days'...it was a borrowed '58 'burst, a 4X12 Carvin box and the Rx head, hard to beat! Here's a photo from the session: (yeah, I know, you old heads have seen it all before...)

Buddy,
Thanks for the reply. John Mayall sure has good taste in guitars! I really like Rickenbackers and have taken alot of guff from other guitar players over the years. If John Mayall uses one, well..it's just further validation of thier versatility. My Rick 360 roars through my Ghia. Buddy, I've enjoyed listening to your clips on Youtube and consider your guitar playing skills to be on par with Eric Clapton. Happy Holidays! Eggman

That particular Ricky has been 'owner improved' w/ about a ton of turquoise and swimmin' pool tile! Youtube has been a blessing and a curse, ya gotta kinda take the good w/ the bad (and there's plenty bad 'uns!) We played a Saturday afternoon neighborhood get-together a while back where the school marching band played 'Smoke On The Water"--we thought it'd freak those kids out to see a buncha old guys play it right back to 'em--which it kinda did--and of course the whole event was captured in 'youtube vision', much to our collective chagrin...
