Steve #1: I don't have a MAZ Jr, my 18 watter is a Ghia. But when I borrow a Jr. from one of you fine folks, I always set it the same. Steve #2 you mean that I played on, or one I liked a lot? I was extremely blessed and fortunate to have been around for the 70th Birthday Concert, it ain't often that a mutt like me gets to run w/ dawgs of that pedigree. All the BB'ers records I had a part in assembling are also near and dear... Spinning Coin (Silvertone) Best of the Silvertones (Silvertone) Padlock on the Blues (Eagle) Blues For The Lost Days (Eagle) John Mayall and Friends: Along For The Ride (Eagle) Stories (Eagle) Road Dogs (Eagle) In The Palace of the King (Eagle) As well as John's Private Stash label website only releases (a little rough, mostly live, but fun to make) UK2K Tour No Days Off Cookin' Down Under (dvd...raw video from The Basement in Sydney, REAL rough...but again, fun) I also played on a Ray Sharpe record called 'Texas Boogie n' Blues' back in the 70's, Ray is a local/nat'l treasure, y'all all know 'Linda Lu' doncha? That was a big deal for me, and that record did OK in the charts and on the air, was played a LOT in that South Carolina 'Beach Music' scene. Had a BLAST doing my solo CD, and playing the tunes from it, and am working towards another one.

Hi Buddy, I've seen you play several gigs here in the UK, including the Half Brick in Worthing a couple of times. I love your playing, and respect any great player who can do the guitar-cable-amp thing properly! I noticed that you usually have an Airbrake with your Maz 38, including the recent gig on 23rd November; did you try the Ghia at the Half Brick, and why did you choose the Maz instead? Thanks! (Still playing your CD almost a year later....)

Hi Mickey, I did try my ghia head at The Half Brick, and decided to go w/ the Senior just because of the headroom factor. By the time the drums, bass and keys get going in that long, low room, there's quite a lot of sound bouncing around in there, and although I had a mic on my amp, it just sounded better to me to have a little 'verb happening, and have the airbrake at the ready in case of anybody being exposed to excess db's ;^)

Thanks Buddy, that's helpful, as I'm looking at changing my Fender amps for Z's, but have been deliberating for months over which one(s)! Excess decibels? I was right in front of you and I didn't notice any......hearing was a bit muzzy the next day though, must have been the beer....

When Buddy used my Maz 38 he had the master at abot 3/4 by the end of the night. It sounded FANTASTIC!!

Buddy , a little offtopic question, anyone can answer if they have something to add, what do you professional guys use to keep the strings clean from corrosion and residue after the gigs . I have to change the strings of my strat after every 3 gigs because the strings become unbearable to play due to rust and corrosion.

Now, I don't have any business playing guitar in the same state as Buddy, but I'll give you my advice because I think the corrosive power of my sweat is at an elite professional level. ;D I use GHS Fast Fret after every set when I'm at a gig. When I'm at home, I always use it before the guitar case goes shut. After awhile you will see dullness on the unwound strings, but you will have no more rust. Having said that, 3 gigs between changing strings would be a long time fore me. No matter what you do, you will loose some of the brightness of the wound strings, so I change my strings before every or every-other gig.

Yeah, it might kill you, but I try not to eat that much of it. Seriously though, they don't list the ingredients but I've read that the main thing is mineral oil.

I've been doing the same for years, changing strings every 3 or 4 gigs, and regularly using Fast Fret. As far as I can tell I'm still living, though some who come to my gigs might dispute that.....

When I'm doin' a string of gigs, I change 'em every 2 shows, sometimes after 1 if they got a real workout. I run my finger under the D string and if I can feel 'ruts' where the frets are, they gotta go! I try to remember to wipe 'em off, but I'm usually haulin' a$$ to the merch booth before all the potential customers exit the premises ;^) and I can't find a rag anyway....

Buddy, you are known for not using any pedals except for a tuner. So, which tuner do you use?
When I saw you at the Pigeon Hole in Big D I didn't even see a tuner and you still sounded killer. ;D

Finger ease is like the stuff they used to spray on the fussball table rods to keep 'em slippery (what's a fussball table, you might ask? old guys know.)
Deacon, if it was a FDP get together, it probably wasn't my amp either, I borrowed a Rt 66 on that one. Otherwise it would have been my ol' faithful Studio Deluxe MAZ 38 and a Boss TU-2 tuner.

Hey there Mr. Whittington! Like the way you play that geetar. I have a question that runs back further than my memory is good for. Back in the mid/late 90's, I saw you play a gig at The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. with Mr. Mayall, and I seem to remember two small amps on stage. Did you ever use a couple of Mini Z's live? What ever they were, the sound was huge out front. You guys sure did bring the house down that night!

Howdy meanslide, Mr Whittington is my father. My name is Bud! LOVE playin' the Belly Up, and just being in that general vicinity. Fish Tacos reign supreme! Never used 2 Minis on a gig, tryin' to think whatcha mighta seen...For awhile there I was runnin' the line out on my ol'faithful MAZ 38 Studio Deluxe 1X12 combo into whatever house amp the venue could (would) provide, they used to have a REAL Blackface Twin Reverb at the Belly Up, coulda been that...also my pal Ron Ellis brought me a Zbest there once and I used a Senior head w/ it. Coulda been the MAZ 38 combo w/ Barney Roach's original Marshall Bluesbreaker too, seems like I did that once. How did I not get fired? Oh, wait... I did!

OK, Bud it is. I knew my memory DIDN'T serve me that well :^) I just remember something small on stage with a huge sound/tone. Please come on back to the BUT anytime...I'd love to hear some of your solo stuff live! That is one great album you got there!
p.s. - What prompted the switch to the 335? Are you still playing it?

a little bit. Still playin' my Scott Lentz guitars (made just north and east of Solana Beach in San Marcos, CA Just like a little variety here and there, sometimes I drag my ol' mutt strat out w/ me. That's the problem (aka blessing) with being a small-timer like me, you can only lug around one git-tar becuse YOU hafta do the luggin'. But I do like my 335 for a lot of things.

Hey BW, this may be an off the wall question, as it has more to do with the engineering side of things, (which you may not have been involved with on your record), but when you were recording your disk, did you happen to take note of what mic's were used for specific songs or solo's and what the placement might have been? I.E. condenser for clean parts, 57 for solo's, maybe Royer 121's etc?
The sound is way too good on your solo record... The tone just hit the sweet spot and I'm wondering what were some of the techniques the engineer used to achieve that.
