I have them made in Sri Lanka, the material is bought in bulk (go figger) and assembled by between-gigs oud players.

hey Buddy, I have a question about your strat(s). Are they the normal vintage fretboard radius with small frets or are they flatter with larger frets? You seem to get some great big bends that are usually difficult with the vintage radius.

Hi Phil, the fret wire is 6105, dunno about the radius, I jes' play 'em... purty sure its just a regular vintage style neck, my Lentz 'S' style is a maple board, and Scott Lentz built me a real chunky rosewood board neck for my mutt '63. Check him out at www.lentzguitar.com

BW, question about your tuner. Do you just leave that on top of the amp and plug your guitar into it when you need to tune, or do you have that in your signal path (guitar>tuner>amp) ?

I just leave it in line. Boss TU-2, Evidence Lyric HG in and out. Trouble is, when you get used to havin' it, you're always messin' w/ it. Guess I should have it on the floor in front, but I just HATE having all that stuff in the way, too much cable everywhere, stuff comin' unplugged, looks like I'd just get my stuff worked over every hunnerd thousand miles where maybe it'd all stay in tune and turned on, but NOOOOOOO...

Hi Buddy! I thought your show was brilliant on Thurdsday at the Flowerpot, and I was thrilled to be able to meet you. I am really looking forward to seeing you again with the Boss, in the meantime I am going to buy a Z. What setup should I have to get a good sound in a variety of venues, with my Paul Reed Smith Modern Eagle? Incidentally, what do you think to PRS? If I were to get a strat, what should I go for? I hope this isn't too many questions in one go, Thanks again for your phenomenal show, Walter.

Nice finally meeting you Walter! I guess my all time favorite, and the one I have used the most is the MAZ Senior, but I love 'em all. I have had really good recording results lately with a borrowed (Thanks Skip!) SRZ-65, a master volume model that really sounds GREAT w/ humbuckers, be prepared, its a powerful beast! The night I saw you I was using a Carmen Ghia head through a single 12 inch Celestion G12H-100. Everybody on this forum is impatiently awaiting the arrival of the EZG-50, Doc's take (and then some) on the old California Blackies w/ reverb all us old guys loved in the days when working guitar players could afford 'em ;^) There is a wide variety of really playable affordable 'S' styles out there these days, some of 'em are even made by Fender! The Highway 1 is a good one, I also like the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Strat. Big fretwire, sounds great right outa the box. And if you can find one of the early 'Crafted in Japan' strats, with a pickup swap and maybe some new pots you're 'in bidness' for a relatively painless outlay of cash. The necks and bodies are comparable and even better than the US models of the same period (if you ask me..) Hopefully we'll seeya this summer somewhere, w/ Mr Mayall, or around November/December '08 I may be back that way again for another 'solo' trek...

We regretfully don't get to Canada much anymore, its hard for one of us to 'get in'. Sure would LOVE to come up! But the legal costs for said bandmate exceed potential wages earned, so....
I never use an airbrake w/ the ghia, just the MAZ Senior, and ONLY when I have to 'cause the room's too loud. I recently went back to the original JJ 12AX7 in V1 of the ghia, the 5751 yielded better headroom but the amp was just too 'bright' so I went back to the tube complement that Doc and the Good Lord intended, with a fresh set of GTEL84 (#6) and 5Y3 rectifier. Never have changed the PI, although Myles made a very good case for that when I borrowed his ghia recently, man did it sound nice and tight, brand new, just right. Thanks fer listening!

Hi Rick, hard to tear anything up while Robben's around! ;^) I have 2 of 'em, 1 in my Studio Deluxe MAZ38 combo, and one in an old style 1X12 Z cab. Used 'em for years, and they don't make 'em anymore! They do have a 100 watt that is designed for a little more low end, that might be just as good, never tried one. I would like to try the new (reissued) 65 watt. Have some in an old MArshall box but I'd like to try 1 (or maybe 2) of 'em together. Just for the record I have the stock Vintage 30/Heritage setup in my Zbest, love it too, just a little hard to get in the trunk o' the rent car w/ suitcases, guitars and CD's....

Would you share some info about the gear you used for the Mini Z clips at Docs' site. Was it a Mini combo with the 8" speaker or were you running a Mini head through a separate cab? If so, what speaker and cab did you use on that?

Eliot, that was a stock mini-z combo with the 8 inch speaker. James, that little yeller dawg was a alligator 'fore i chopped his legs off and painted him yeller. Stuey, I'm the wrong guy to ask! Took me WAY too long to finish my little project, although once we got goin' it went purty smoothly 'cause of the good guys that were helpin' me out. On the J Mayall stuff, we usually have a couple of weeks (7-10 days countin' Sundays off, real loose) to get sounds, and rhythm tracks, and then we have 'guitar day' (actually 'guitar afternoon') for my wayward meanderings, after which I'll be at Burbank Airport at 5am headin' home. Then they put vocals on and ship it off to the mastering lab, label does the artwork, usually about 6 months later it'll show up somewhere. Like the moderator sez, "Ask Carl Verheyen" HE's the guy that KNOWS that stuff inside out. I'm the driver, and they let me pick a little bit every now and again.

Ya ain't gittin' MY cot James :^) All we have is a weekend in California and a weekend in Missouri, then in mid-September we have 10 shows in The Netherlands and 20 shows in France. I have a coupla weeks in the UK in Mid November doing my CD stuff, and after that--its a mystery. Love to come to nashville Stuey! What, not enuf GUITAR PLAYERS there? I guess I could go ahead and visit, being a guitar OWNER. Maybe I could get a tutorial from wunnathem 'Thirteenhundredandfiftytwo git-tar pickers in Nashville....'

Buddy Just a quick question, I saw you recentley with John Mayall at the Jazz cafe in London and it looked as though you were using a 240volt cream Maz 38 with what looked like a tube screamer. Can you say whether it was a standard Ibanez or a clone?
By the way the gig absolutely rocked and I thought you were all on fire. Even John's keyboards and harp were out fo this world.

Hi Limey, Our good friends at Peach Music, Braintree, Essex were kind enough to supply me w/ a Z rig while my amp was on the way to the bus barn in Berlin to await the next tour.... The 'Screamer was a stock TS-9 supplied by John Henry, I usually don't use a pedal w/ a MAZ but the room was so small I was trying to keep the db police at bay. And THEN Mick Taylor showed up....

Hey Buddy. This isn't as much as a gear question as it is a career question. With all this BP talk going down I decided to put on my John Mayall 70th anniversary DVD and it made me start to wonder what your opinion would be if asked "what would be your most favorable recording or even documented performance up to this point in your career". The solo stuff is awesome and I'd love to see you come out to So Cal at some point. Is touring on your horizon as well? Thanks, Steve (wise guy)
