Hey BW!!!
Any chance you can post the settings for your maz38?
Also, you have this cool vibe effect on "I Thought I Heard The Devil". Can you tell us what type of pedal that is?
Thanks! pg

Hmmm, lesseehere... Roughly, depending on the room, Reverb is at about 8-9 o'clock-- just on enough to wet it up a little when the guitar volume is all the way up Cut varies w/ the room, but is always around 9 o'clock give or take a hair more or less. (and usually less) Depends on if the room is high-endy, and how high the treble and mids are. The Master is always halfway up, or 12 o'clock. Bass is pretty low too, just enough to round the sound out a little. Usually 7-8 o'clock. Just turn it up to where you begin to hear the lows respond. If I'm having trouble w/ the room, usually its the mid that needs to be rolled back and that's where I go first. Pretty low, about 8-10 o'clock tops. Treble is between 12 and 2 o'clock, or halfway up or a little above. I used to run it higher on my original MAZ 38 Studio Deluxe combo, ( still a slammin' Z amp!) but w/ the cut control, I don't seem to use as much treble. Its still pretty bright, but you can sorta 'cut' back the whole high-end 'envelope' w/ the cut knob. The Volume is, with single coils, from about 3 o'clock to all the way up. If I happen to plug in a guitar w/ 'buckers (which ain't TOO often) the Volume goes back to about 12-1 o'clock. Use the guitar volume control to 'play' the amp into different levels of sustain. Hope that's not too confusing! " I thought I Heard The Devil" was a Lentz 'S' style thru the red MAZ Senior head into a 4X12 Marshall slant cab w/ 65 watt Celestions. I didn't use any pedals on it that I can remember, just some compression and reverb at the console. Its possible that David Z the producer used a touch of harmonizer on it, (again at the board) but I don't think so. The only time I can remember using a 'vibe' effect was on 'Pieces and Parts' on 'Stories' and that was one of those red Dunlop Roto-Vibe wah-lookin' contraptions that the studio had. And then very sparingly, only in the 7b/4 turnaround back into the verse. And now, off the soapbox and back to your regularly scheduled program....

My favorite clip on the Z site is the Rx "Dead City" clip.

Hi Paul, Buddy used Scotty's Senior at an outdoor show so I took the liberty to snap a picture of the settings before touching it. Buddy is definately in my top handfull of favorite alltime tones and palying style. Buddy has all the high end sizzle.....with ZERO harshness for the audience. img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/m1911/BuddyWhittingtonMAZsettings.jpg

Yeah, Paul, What Mark said!:^) Mark, you're easily amused! He's masquerading as a family man and great dad, but in reality he's Scotty's Personal Manager, providing him w/ top notch, world class touring equipment that I've been fortunate enough to horn in on a time or two... Laroosco, 'Dead City' was indeed a '58 Les Paul Standard 'burst that I, again, hornswaggled my way into. At the time it belonged to LA/Stockholm luthier Roger Giffin, and was on loan to producer John Porter, who brought it to our sessions and for some reason, gave me free rein with it for the duration. Plugged it into my Prescription head and a Carvin 4X12 that was at the studio. Well, at least the AMP was mine! The guitar was sorta 'for sale' but I didn't even let my wandering, mortgage payment-making mind go there... As an aside, Giffin had a floor lamp in his shop crafted from an ES-335 of fairly recent vintage that bore the legend..."Gibson is only good enough" instead of "Only a Gibson is good enough" Hilarious!

BW, thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions! If you're ever in the Ma/NH area, and you need an amp, you're always more than welcome to use my Sr. /Zbest 2x12! :-)
Mark, thanks for the photo. Thats exactly how BW described it above!

Paul...
Where are you exactly in the Ma/NH area? I live in Boston & there are no other Z players around here that I know of. We have a somewhat local dealer and he seems to move a fair amount of Z amps but I haven't run into anyone else who plays one.
Just curious...

BW is evidently very consistent with his settings. 2 years ago he was kind enough to email this reply to me, shortly after I bought a Maz Sr/ ZBest rig:
"Hi Bill, I usually run the reverb just barely on, enough to hear it when the guitar is all the way up. Cut is about 8-9 O'clock, middle is about 10-11 o'clock,Turn the bass OFF and play your low strings while turning it up 'til you can just begin to hear it work, about 8 o'clock..this keeps it from getting 'flabby' on the low end. Master is halfway up,treble varies w/ the room from 1-3 o'clock,(and the treble control depends a lot on how the mid and cut are set, they sorta work together)The gain control is anywhere from 3 or 4 o'clock to all the way up, depending on the amount of drive needed for the tune. Usually set pretty high though, and controlled w/ the guitar. Hope that helps, good luck BW"
Of course I've saved it for future reference!

I can see that finger stickin' up all the way over here on the east side! So when do we get 'chicken fried' again, Dave? Guess its my turn to buy...(dang it!) Yep, Squeally, I guess it is a little loud...but it sounds so ...GOOD! (he sez, sitting in front of the 'puter w/ 2 ears a' ringin') Just don't aim it at the sound guy and be sure to block the back or use your Zbest so the drummer don't lose his, uhh...mind...if EVER he DID have one in the first place. Y'all already know this, but what has three legs and a d#@k on it? A DRUM THRONE!

Hey BW, been watching a little BW action from "Stumpy's" and "Hamils", courtesy of an un-named source but I'm sure you can guess. What a treat!!! My friend Simon, who is the Marshall endorsee of Aust and a great blues/jazz player is coming over with a few beers at Xmas and we're gonna pretend we're sittin in a good ol' Texan bar watchin' some killer playing. By the way, don't worry, I won't reproduce, sell, fileshare whatever, just my personal stash!

There are plenty of Z Players in our area. There has to be, the local Z dealer, Boston Guitar Works can't keep them instock. It's location is pretty though to get to. I wish they would open a second store up in NH. pg

Awrite, I'm buyin', but only if you you can get the same waitress (you know, the purty one that sells your CD's to her customers;^) Can you say 'kickback'? Hey Taz, looks like Zane has gone truly international. I guess some of the ink rubbed off that dvd on its way Down Under, that's "Hank's" not "Hamil's"! Hey Zane, if'n you're gonna run a bootleg video bidness, at LEAST invest in a Label machine! Ol' 'Tear it Down' Terry Downs sho' is doin' some pickin' in fabulous 'Zane-o-Vision', eh?

Hi Buddy. I have been wondering since I first saw the 70th birthday DVD what it was Eric Clapton said to you at the end of the show when he patted you on the back and you both laughed. I'll understand if you're too humble to say but I've been curious.

I noticed that the clips on Letnz was recorded with some sort of condenser... maybe an AKG? Anyway it looks as if it's about a good 10 ft way from the cab. Is this the only mic that was used to record those clips? And if so, why was the mic so far from the cab?

I find it interesting that they mic'd the Vintage 30 vs. the GH30. And then to get the 'room' effect, they stuck a condensor about 10 ft away to get the whole cab+room+air in between.
Pretty cool.. thanks pg

Heck, we didn't know which speaker was which, just threw the mic up and went fer it. That other mic MIGHT not even be hooked up, I'd have to ask the engineer. Mighta just been sittin' there from another session.
