According to a recent interview in Guitar Player Magazine Smokin' Joe Kubek says he is using a Maz 38C. An interesting comment made by Joe was the amp is 38 Watts, but it is 38 Watts from Hell. This amp will keep up with anything.

Joe is a great player, has been for many moons. Bnois King is the secret weapon in that aggregation. Mostly plays rhythm and sings, but he is also a chord melody playin' jazz maniac. Good, hard workin' road dawgs.

Bass man Bobby Chitwood sez Bnois' mama calls him 'Bee-noise' Everybody else, more like ben-NOISE. (you ain't lived 'til you've heard him play some chord melody solos, he is a BAD man, and a heckuva good guy. Joe too.

Man, how do you get to the next level as a guitarist??? I've played and studied, and studied and played like a madman for years. I hate everything I play and feel like I'm stagnating. I feel like I've hit a ceiling, yet my desire to be a good guitarist remains. I went to Pittsburgh and watched Chris Cain play in an intimate setting. He was so good, it physically hurt me to watch him. You (Buddy) do the same thing to me....so does Smokin Joe..... I just feel like I'm missing something that's prohibiting me from reaching my full potential.

I know whatcha mean, Bo- All of us are in the same boat, frustrated, stagnated, and aggravated. All I have to do is go do a gig with Terry Downs and/or Glen Fleming to realize where I'm at playin' wise. Makes me want to hit the 'shed, and usually when I do, something new/fresh comes of it, even though I'll never sound like either one o' those guys.

Jesus.....I don't know Terry Downs or Glen Fleming......I don't even want to hear them. If they make you feel bad....Good God.

I just feel like I'm missing something that's prohibiting me from reaching my full potential. We all probably move in and out of that feeling, even if we're not admitting it all the time. Some time ago I came to this conclusion -- As long as I am still on fire to IMPROVE and IMPROVING, as long as people truly enjoy what I'm doing, I can be settled with it. Not satisfied or complacent but happy with my playing. I've been playing at what most would consider a professional level for 31 yrs.,(I started early, I'm not a total dino). I've always felt short of the mark as I saw all the monster players. But now I feel that all I have to do is, be the best that I can be. Now it even seems that my playing has taken a quantum leap, once I settled into it. Don't get me wrong I'm still in reality about all the great players out there. I seem to appreciate them even more. Including some of my stuff too. damn, is that Dr. Freakin Phil or what? Where the hell did that come from? Sorry yall.

re the talent question- there's always someone better than you- you just work and listen. A guy once told me you need to take the attention off yourself and play with intention- you have to mean it. He also said you have to realize you're giving a gift to the audience. Most of us are way too self-critical. We need to be humble and try to be better players, but if the audience is getting off on the band and you get the odd punter saying, "Man you played some nice stuff tonight!" you're doing ok. Rave finished!
And yes Smokin Joe is an amazing player- hearing Mellow Down Easy for the first time changed me from trying to be a SRV clone into accepting it was cool to be different. Brett

I'm no great shakes of a player, but the times that I really feel like I have improved are when I get out and play with other accomplished players. Even if, or maybe especially if they are over my head. Playing live with a band just helps me improve my chops. And, if they're better than me it seems to bring me up a level or two. I don't get the chance to go to many jams because I live in a rural area, but plan to make the effort to join in more when I can get to the city.
