Just curious as to which Rock artists are using Z amps. I know there are a good amount of Country & Blues players using them. But I haven't really found any Rock artists using them. This surprises me since most of what I play is rock & I find my Ghia to be an excellent rock amp.

Actually, I play in a death metal/grind band and I use a Bogner Uberschall, ENGL Fireball AND I just started using my Route 66 in the mix. When all three amps humming I get the entire spectrum covered. The Route 66 adds a ton of definition to the overall sound and it brings a very special tonal dimension that I really like. It is a great addition to my show rig! I'm pretty interested to hear a SRZ-65 as well. I've been hearing the gain level and tone is similar to a JCM 800, but I have not yet played one. Does anybody have experience with this amp?

The SRZ-65 is no longer being made by the Dr. It has been replaced by the 6545. I really like the sound of the 6545. To be honest with you if I didnt have my Shiva I would have bought a 6545. The Shiva & the 6545 seem to have the same tonal vibe to them & that's the only reason I haven't bought one. I wanted something different than what I had so I went with the Ghia.
If your looking for clips you can try the proguitar site. I think it's linked off of the Dr.Z site somewhere.

Thanks. I will check out the clips on that site. I thought the SRZ-65 was still in production, but only on a special order basis. If the Dr. has actually ceased making them, I guess it's ebay for me. (There's one going for @ $1500 on there right now, but alas I am broke at the present time...)

I asked the Dr. about a special order for one but he seemed to push the 6545. Makes sense since it's easier for him to build an amp that is currently in production rather than have to build a one-off.
I think that the 6545 os a better choice. Might as well have a good clean side as well! Cover all the bases.. you know?

Well, David Grissom is a sort of rock player (though backing up the Chicks right now) Joe Walsh is a rock player for sure, and didn't I hear Neil Zaza was using them? Hell of a player.

Dr Z's web site says that Doyle Bramhall II has a Route 66. I haven't seen him use it live yet.
The Route 66 would be perfect for the tones he gets on his Welcome album.

I have the Dr. Z SRZ-65. When I want to play metal with it (and by metal I mean 80's Metallica, Slayer, Maiden) I generally use a boost pedal that adds a little overdrive, the second channel of my Dr. Z Super-Duper. But, I'm using a Les Paul R8 with 57 classics in it, so with high output humbuckers, you might not need to boost. I also keep gain below noon, so... reading through this post, it's pretty off-topic. if you want to continue the discussion, let's move it to the SRZ-65 forum, where I have the only thread so far. ...back to the topic at hand. I know that one of the guitarist's from the Supersuckers mentioned getting a 6545 in a Vintage Guitar article a few months back. He wasn't using one when I saw them live, but they still blew the doors off the place.

A rock artist using a Dr. Z Maz combo (not sure if its the Jr. or Sr.) is Lovedrug. Great band with great tone, if you ask me.

I use my Z's for everything. I just use pedals for different styles.

Doesn't the guy from Black Crows use a KT-45? I heard that is one of the best rock amps you can get because it takes pedals great and also sounds great on 11.

Yeah, Audley Freed does have a KT-45. He smokes on the guitar too. His Black Crows stuff is cool but I really dig him on the two Cry Of Love albums, especially Brother. That whole album rocks.

Both Ben Gibbard (singer; Maz Jr) and Chris Walla (lead guitar; Route 66) from Death Cab for Cutie use Dr. Z. Excellent band.

Why yes, yes they are. Their live dvd/ documentary is really good, but it was from their 2004 spring tour before they aquired their Z's.

I saw Aerosmith a few years ago and Brad Whitford had a Z on stage. I can't recall which model though. I'd imagine they count as a rock band...

with regards to DCFC i think Chris mainly uses a MAZ 38 head and his Route 66 is a backup - i'm not totally sure on that one though.

not tryin' to bust your bubble, but.. . . . .
Audley doesn't play with the Crowes anymore. Marc Ford is playing with them now, He was the guitar player before Audley back in the day. Marc has great tone, but he plays Roccaforte amps. He could very well have a Z as well, not sure. I read on a Crowes message board that Marc was sighted in Nashville noodling on a Mini-z at some guitar store when they were in town.

Speaking of rock stuff - I did an interesting gig yesterday. We were the house band for about 12 or 13 different singers who each came up and did two songs. It was a lot of country, but also some rock (Bob Seger, Springsteen, etc..). AND - one guy got up and did a Def Leppard tune and a Bon Jovi tune. My Mazerati along with some pedals did a great job of covering all the sounds. For rock stuff I usually stack a couple of overdrives (TS9 and an SD1) and I'll grab a humbucker guitar for heavier stuff. I think the Z stuff would cover just about any rock gig - especially with some pedals and maybe running thru a 4X12.
