Can anybody compare the TONE of the Maz GT with that of the Stang Ray for me? I LOVE the tone I get from the Stang Ray, but I wanna take that tone and be able to drive it hard into overdrive, without a pedal. I can fuzz out the Rem and the Wreck to the max, but the Ray stays so clean. If the Maz GT sounded like the Ray, only fuzzier, I'd be living large!
Then ....... Sounds like the Monza is the gainy one that'll get the overdrive, but some folks write that it sounds like the Mazeratti, some write that they sound quite different. What the? Help me out here. And the Monza comes with a Master Vol now!

I only spent a short time with a Mazerati GT Didn't remind me of my Ray, and it was loud to get the gain below in case you didn't stumble along this link

The Stangray and the Maz GT are not anywhere near each other sonically. The Ray really is a great clean amp that has that shimmery chime. The GT, on the other hand, is a real fire breather. Even with the MV mod, turned down low it still is really gritty. Using the guitar volume to get you into semi-clean tones works but IMHO it is really hard to get a really clean tone. Once upon a time Doc was working on a Stangray GT two channel amp - which was my dream amp. Never did come about but in my opinion it was a great pairing that would have covered the sonic spectrum. I have my GT stacked on top of my Stingray through a 1x12 gold using a Radial Headbone. Closest thing I can get to the Stangray GT.
Monza with a MV does a better clean than the GT. It also does a better fuzz when you dime the volume. But there is something about the GT that I really love.
BTW - I did have Doc put a MV on my Maz GT to get it to a more useable volume level - that thing is incredibly loud!

JJ,
I don't have a Stang Ray to compare, but I find that the GT gives some pretty good cleans (and I think the GT demo that Rick added to his post sort-of demonstrates this...). I'm sure it's not in the same league as Ray cleans, but it does have some of the EL84 character when you roll back on the guitar volume. I've kind of been a stand-out in really liking the GT's cleans. I don't know if it's my particular amp (I guess it's common for there to be some tonal variance w/ amps even of the same model) or what. When I set the GT's Volume between 12:00-2:00, and I use a single coil guitar, I can get damn nice cleans rolling back on my guitar's volume knob. Humbuckers leave a little "hair" on the cleans at those settings.
When I set the amp up cleaner, Vol bet 8:00-10:00, I like the cleans as well as the cleans on my Galaxie and/or KT-45. They are different (obviously - 6L6 vs EL34 vs EL84), but I like them as well as the others.
And then, of course, w/ the amp set up w/ the Vol above 12:00 and the guitar vol rolled up, you get all that glorious sustain and rich saturation. It's a very sophisticated distortion. It is a fire-breather, but I don't find it crunchy in the least (like an SRZ is crunchy). It is very smooth.

Thanks for the feedback. Good thing I didn't pop for that GT on eBay. There is something about the actual tone of the Ray that I love whether I play it super clean or dirty it up by diming the volume and cranking the dB down with the brake. That actually gets a fair amount of overdrive - I find that the more you brake any of these amps the more you get an overdriven sound (I've said this before here in Z world). When I add some dB's by lessening the brake, I lose some of that overdriven sound and the Ray cleans up again. I'd love to have a gainier Ray, and the Tim pedal through this amp does give me a great overdriven tone, but I'd rather get it without a pedal - nuthin' but amp. That being said, I can kinda get the Wreck to have that tone by nearly diming both the bass and treble controls - ooooo - I gotta try this again now that I think of it - haven't done that in a year. Hmmm, now it seems I've begun rambling on and on ..........
One last thought (since I'm in ramblin' mode): in all reality, I really don't need another amp, ever again. Between the Ray, the Rem, and the Wreck I have world class tone to last a lifetime! I never cease to be amazed at how freakin' good these amps sound.
Nuff said.
