I'm still interested in getting one but curious about the sound. I have a maz18 that does bedroom volumes good but had a Mazerati GT that was impossible to play in my house without an attenuator. Any help would be appreciated!

My Music Room is a smaller size bedroom and love the Stangray in there
Great with pedals also, doesn't compress or collapse like some others
I had a Maz for a short time, and it seemed a bit warmer and never really got it going
The Ray has all the highs, tight bass , great Vox tone I think it's a great low volume clean amp, underated pedal platform

I think it sounds awesome at lower volumes...but then, my low volume may be different from yours.
For perspective though, I didn't think the Maz sounded that great at the same volume.

I agree, I think the RAY @1/4 volume sounds fantastic. Less efficient Alnico speakers also help to give you more volume knob.

It definately can and does sound good at any volume level. If you have been looking at my previous posts...don't think that I don't like the amp. I do...I just get what I'm looking for from a different Z. Every person has a different taste in tone. The Ray is a great amp...I just personally like my Maz 18 better.

As a maz18 owner myself looking to get a stangray, can you give me comparisons between the 2?

I think it can and does.
But to put things in perspective I think the same thing about a Twin Reverb...

Stangray has a little more mid high end sparkle. It also has a more Voxy vocal tone. The more you turn it up, the more glorious it sounds. With the blues, the bottom end can get farty. To my ears, the Ray loses it's charm with a Brakelite, whereas I love my Maz with the Brakelite on 1. It feels like the Ray wants to breathe/unleashed...and when it does it is glorious. It takes pedals well and it a fairly clean platform for pedals. I just don't need that kind of volume where I play. I need to tone it down and it doesn't sound the same to me then. The Maz 18 is easier to dial in tones for me...and I don't feel like I am losing my tone when I use a brakelite. It is just the right amp for me personally.

As a maz18 owner myself looking to get a stangray, can you give me comparisons between the 2? Not terribly descriptive but: Maz = Wonderful variety of tones that all sound great once you get the right speaker to fit your ears. Ray = The best cleans I've ever heard* up to any volume I would ever play. Never have turned it up past noon since I've owned it, even live. I knew up front that it was too much amp for me but once I heard it, I had to have one. Thanks Drew. * Except for my guitar teacher's '65 twin reverb before he had to re-tube it. Never got the mojo back after that no matter what he tried. Eventually sold it. Darn shame.

REMEBER THIS WITH THE RAY..... its a british sounding amp designed around a Vox type circuit, It also has a very touchy tone and cut controls which affect the treble/mids of the amp. For me I like the Ray right at Noon, Thats where it starting to breakup and get tasty , I wish it would be more Gainy, The Maz and The Ray sound totally different in a Great way, The Ray is also More clean and Has more headroom due to being a 30 watt platform. Its an amazing amp with say a Greenback you can actually push the amp alot with a less efficient speaker. Be Careful!! The Greens are only rated at 25 watts I wouldnt run it wide open , But for home use its PERFECT!!!! ;D You can t go wrong with the ray, Give it some time and expeiriment with speakers to desired taste, theres plenty of threads here about this. Rock on the RAY RULES!!!

I HAVE A 4X10 ITS UNOADED AT THE MOMENT I LOVE CELESTION GOLDS SO MUCH I MAY LOAD IT WITH THOSE, HOWEVER I JUST RECENTLY AQUIRED A COUPLE SCUMBAGS!!! A 65 WATT J75 WHICH IS REALLY COOL AND A M75 25 WATTER. THIS SETUP KILLS WITH THE STANGRAY, IT PROVIDES NICE CLEANS AND SMOOTH CREAMY DRIVE SOUNDS THE M75 SOUNDS BETTER THAN MY EARLY 70'S GREEBACKS. AT BEDROOM LEVELS AS FOLLOWS= INPUT-Lo TONE = Noon CUT- 1:00 VOL- 2:00

I only get the opportunity to play out a few times a year anymore but I always get complimants on my tone (funny, never on my playing )when I bring the Ray. Hope all is well with you.
