I started with a gold years ago... but have moved away from speaker breakup almost entirely ('cept for the 28 and small amps). SO I shifted to the EV 12L... but the lack of highs has me diming the treble with the bass off. I tried a jbl (big fan of them with fender amps), but the dry crisp edge did not work well. On a bit of a whim after reading a couple of threads on TGP, I bought a couple of Altec 417 8B's... holy cow, they seam the perfect match. Way clean... but with an upper end response that allows me a more moderate solution on the tone post. I'm guessing the C's and later H's would be great as well.
I play mostly on the neck humbucker... and after a couple of hours auditioning them this morning they seem to be a killer match. We'll see over the next couple of weeks if these bring the big 66 back into the regular rotation. And yes... as I get the rig up I will try and capture some clips.
Just thought you'all might be interested.

Sounds good! Congrats on the Altec's. That is something that you had to have the treble maxed and the bass off with the EV. The 66 must be a dark knight for sure!!

I have an Altec 417 8C in a box in my basement - haven't tried it with my 66 yet, but I'll have to do it!

Does your Altec 417 8B have an aluminum dustcap?
