I'm new to the Dr Z family and recently purchased a Maz 8. So, far I am loving the variety of great sounds I can get from this amp. With the reverb included and the ability to get decent break up, I can get most of the sounds I am looking for right out of the box. However, I am curious if any of you are using pedals to dial in your sound and which pedals you prefer.

Hi,
I'm also quite new to Z land (Maz 8 for a few months) and I really dig clean and dirty sounds you can get straight from the amp... But I do dig the flavour my BB Preamp adds or the unbeatable big muff taste. I could test what can do a good fuzz face to this amp.
Enjoy!

The footswitch to activate the 'tone bypass'... Tons of tone!!

So what are you looking for? Dirt? Modulation pedals?
I do like the dirt from this amp, but I also like a few different flavours too. I thought that it'll be a shame to run my dirt pedals through it. I've always seemed to be an external dirt, through a cleanish amp, kind of guy.
I've had my PaulC Tim pedal for a while. Just a great O/D.
Distortion pedals are fairly subjective. What I look for, or like, you might not. There's so many to choose from too, same a fuzz pedals. Budget is another factor.
One of the latest distortion pedals that I recieved is a Dr Scientist the Elements. Wow, very versitile, form an O/D to full on balls out distortion. Worth every penny, imo.
I also really like Bearfoot stuff. The Dyna Red Distortion is a nice touch sensitive, creamy, sustaining, Marshall in a box. It's modeled after a JTM45, I believe. The three knob unit just didn't have the presence that I wanted, so I have a four knob unit on the way. I have a four knob Model H that's apparently a Hiwatt in a box. That's another good one with a different voicing.
I'm apparently hooked on these little boxes. 8)
Fuzz... now that's a whole 'nother chapter...

If I could only pick one OD pedal to keep it would be my G2D Custom Overdrive. Really a great little box of Tone! BB is awesome. Modded TS808 I like. I agree the eq bypass gives the Maz 8 some gorilla balls!!

Thanks for the responses. Coming from another AMP that used to break up real early, I appreciate the range of sounds that I can get from the MAZ right out of the box. Although I haven't used a lot of pedals in the past, I do like to use a distortion pedal to allow me to go from clean to dirt without messing with the AMP while playing. Lately, I have been considering the Pinnacle/Sovereign pedals from Wampler. I will also consider some of the suggestions mentioned here.

Wampler Paisley, Xotic BB, Modded TS808, Wampler HotWired, and Timmy. All sound great with the 8.

I like to find a good clean tone that I like, then set the pedals to taste.
You sure can't go wrong with Wampler. The Soverign would be my choice. Great reviews on this pedal. Apparently, it's a Pinnacle, and then some. Fairly tweakable and versitile pedal.
That's the thing that I like about the Elements, the tweakability. If you can't find what you want with that unit, you won't find it elsewhere.

Thanks Zed and Jes. I like what I am hearing from Wampler. Especially the video demos of the Sovereign. I can't believe the range of sounds they are getting out of that pedal. I guess I will need to try a few of these suggestions to see what I like best. To bad none of my local shops sell Z amps to demo them on. I guess I will probably just demo on a Vox. Thanks again for your input.

+1 on the tone bypass fs.
I also like my Bearfoot mint green mini vibe and KOT. My Klon Klone kicks butt too!

I've gotten stunning results with a Landgraff and a Boiling Point. A lot of $, but both pedals provide clean boost and multiple OD flavors.
I think it's hard to find a pedal that won't sound good with the 8. Some may take more time to dial in.

Looking to get a distortion/OD pedal for the Maz....currently I have a stock TS9...it's good, but just doesn't cut it these days. I play mostly strats and tele's. I think I have narrowed it down to Rockett Animal, Xotic BB Preamp, or Crowther Hotcake
Can anyone lead to me a certain one?

I've got a slew of od pedals, but my favorite one right now with the Maz 8 is the Wampler Euphoria. But it really isn't that fussy.

My latest go-to pedals on my board are: - Klon KTR for transparent OD - JHS Angry Charlie for distortion. Think JCM800 in a box. - Xotic SP Compressor - Earthquaker Devices' Grand Orbiter for a nice subtle phaser - Red Witch Empress for chorus (if it's good enough for Andy Summers, it's good enough for me). - Old Blood Noise Endeavors' Black Fountain for old school Boss DM-2 delay. I actually have a DM-2 and this has won me over in its place.

The Maz 8 is really fine with most pedals I tried with it, especially gain pedals. It takes my fuzz boxes a lot better than my Therapy for instance. But the pedal which sounds the most incredible, to me, with this amp is the Lazy J Cruiser Deucer. The best overdrive pedal I have played in the Maz 8 is just pure joy!

Yes, it's probably easier to list the pedals that didn't work with this amp, not many I've tried.
