I thought I'd share more than a year-long experiment in the off-chance someone will benefit from my tone search.
I've nearly always had a clean amp and used pedals to get varying levels of grit, overdrive and distortion. I got my Route over a year ago and started down the same path...trying to find the pedals that worked. While I agree with most that the Route is a pedal-friendly platform, I never got to that tone in my head. Something was missing.
About six months ago I began using an Air Brake and running the Route volume at noon, tweaking the tone knobs as necessary. As usual the more you turn it up the better it sounds. OK...now we're getting closer. I added a few pedals to the mix and really like what I'm hearing!
Here's a quick overview of my "drive" pedals and how I use them. Keep in mind I use single-coil guitars exclusively (Strat, Nocaster, PRS SE One) so YMMV.
* Analogman NKT275 Sunface - Who doesn't love a Ge fuzz? I run the volume at noon'ish and the fuzz all the way up. I rarely turn the guitar all the way up when using this pedal as to not get too "fuzzed out." It enhances the Route's overdrive and distortion tones
* Analogman Beano Boost - Used by itself or with the Sunface (ala Sunlion) it takes the Route to the next level of OD and distortion. The toggle allows you to enhance treble, mid or all frequencies for that extra special something.
* Xotic EP Booster - I just picked this up. It hits the front end of the Route a bit harder and adds a "girth" to the tone. Nice touch on cleaner passages.
* Fulltone Octafuzz - I use this in the octave setting for weird tones but find the Si fuzz gets me into radical distortion tones too.
All these pedals add to the wonderful tones the Route already produces. It's what works for me and I felt like sharing.
;D
