My Ghia head is just over two years old. Occasionally it 'hisses' slightly when switched on. Once warmed up it stops. Is this a sign that a valve may need changing?

Does it do it with nothing plugged in to the input?

My deluxe does that when I turn off the standby. Just for a second. The hiss kind of swells for a second then it's fine. I guess it depends how long the hiss is lasting for. Is it just a second or two or longer? Does it happen every time you turn the amp on? Are you letting the amp warm up for at least a minute before flipping the standby? As far as tube change goes, does it sound like your amp isn't as lively as it once was? If it has been two years since you changed tubes, then I would definitely stick some new ones in there and see how the amp sounds. Sometimes you can get used to 'old tubes' and the way they make your amp sound. Though usually you will start to notice that your amp is not responding like it should. Hope this helps.

It's stopped doin' it now! It did it without anything plugged in. I'm using a Z air brake to calm the thang down at home. John Boy

That is pretty common in most tubes until they warm up a bit and get the electrons flowing from the cathode to the plate. It is not an indication or a tube wearing out or anything at all for the most part.

Thanks for the information. After a few weeks it has started crackling slightly on start up, I let it warm up for 10 - 12min and it was ok. That was without any guitar plugged in. The air brake in line though. Are all those amps yours? I'm toying with getting a mini Z, any opinions? John Boy

If it hisses check for snakes , if it hums it probably forgot the words ;D As Myles and others mentioned , not unusual when electronic things are warming up loading up and unloading as well . If it continues then there is a problem . Don't know on the Mini Z but I'm liking my Maz jr !!

On the Mini-Z .... really fun amps .... used a lot on this CD so it's a pretty cool example of what the amp can do: www.bradpaisley.com/index.php?em691=61040_0__0_~0_-1_05_2006_0_0&content=news&content=newsThis was written by Zac Childs.

Thanks for the info on the Mini Z, if it's good enough for Brad then it's far too good for me! I'll get one anyway. Regards John Boy
