must I have an unshielded speaker cable going from my Maz-38 combo to an extension speaker cabinet or can I use an instrument cable also? I was told the shielded cable will hurt the amp "eventually." Guitar center sold me a monster standard 100 proformance instrument cable when I asked for a speaker cable. should I go buy a different cable?

Take it back to GC and get the correct cable. You should NOT use instrument cables for speaker applications.

Go back to GC and get a SPEAKER cable. Take back the one they gave you and show 'em the error of their ways.

agreed. And it should be a lot cheaper than a monster instument cable. I don't think the brand makes a huge difference (although it does certainly make a difference in instrument cables). Look for quality connectors (neutrik or switchcraft). Gold makes no difference IMO, don't pay extra. 16 or 18 ga speaker wire is lots big. I make my own, and they work great. And I can repair them when the cat chews through them

thanks to everyone who replied. I went to GC and they said they were (conveniently) out of the cheaper speaker cables and were very willing to sell my monster speaker cables for around $40 for a 10 foot and 3 foot cable. went to Orvac electronics, one of those nerd electronics stores, and very high quality speaker cables were around $14 total for the same two lengths.
