I had a 12AT7 in my Maz Sr. in the reverb circuit that would make a noise through the speaker if tapped with a pick. I was talking to Dr. Z about it and I described it as being microphonic. The good Doctor corrected me, saying that it was a "noisy" tube and not microphonic. He said it isn't microphonic unless it generates noise like howling or feedback by itself when playing through the amp.
I've always assumed any tube that made noise when tapped or otherwise, was microphonic. What's the correct definition please?

Unless you hear it ring or howl a noise when you tap it ain't no thang. Back in the early 70s I used a Dual Showman Reverb tower of doom. I bought new tubes from Burstein Appleby (defunct electronic parts supplier). Half way thru the gig I started getting the howling. I had to put the head on a chair from then on. Those tubes were either GE or Sylvania. I don't have problems with tubes now-a-days.
