I see that the newer Route 66's are shipping with 5U4's, and that this will decrease headroom.
Would a rebias be necessary when experimenting with the GZ34?

Yes for the long term of the KT66's life, and for optimized tone.
BUT you may plug in a GZ-34 just to hear and FEEL the differance for a short stint. If you like it get it biased , with a GZ-34 I like the bias per tube between 32 and 38 mA. Season to taste......

Great, thanks Doc!
I see on your website: "Route 66 36 mA" Is this still a good range for the 5U4?

No problem! Sorry for the short reply above - I was getting ready to run out the door and wanted to answer your question quickly.
In my route 66 with a 5U4, 36ma puts me at 60% - perfect for the Route.

check the plate voltage too as it will change and effect the calcs. I would bias at 70% for that amp. I like the GZ-34 best or the 5V4...
