OK....Love my 1x12 StingRay so much took a gamble on a rather rough or let's say well used Stangray Ray 2x12 I found on EBay/pawn shop described as "perfect working order" . Ten minutes of warm up ...Ten minutes of play....uh, did the power go out?....no. But my amp is off. switches are up and on. Oh crap. Pulled both breakers, fine. Hmmmmm. better call Jeff Snider my amp guy. amp has gone tits up on me. Anyway. Called UPS made a claim, emailing the pawn shop. Got the amp to my Mr Jeff Snider amp tech. Waiting for his bench test estimate at this point. maybe filters, maybe caps, maybe? sounded amazing for the first ten minutes through the celestian blue. OMG! I got the amp for $800.00. after Jeff gives me his estimate, I'll fax it to Both eBay seller and provide the estimate to UPS. I'm not payin the repair, and hoping we'll get cooperation on both ends. Big heavy amp (like fender twin reverb or bigger big) The holly grail of tones for me. this amp has been played for sure...let's say, broken in...and opened up sonically. It has some mojo. which I do like! I'll keep ya posted. feel free to chime in your .02c

Did you try powering it back up after it cooled down for a bit?

I was the other person bidding on it You can always send your amp to Doc/Don to have them look at it and repair it to good as new (or better) shape. I purchased a real deal on E-bay for an original Prescription RX for about the same price as your Stangray. when it got here it was humming louder than I wanted it to so I sent it to Don. He found that someone tried to turn it into an octopus wiring exercise. They returned it to new condition - it's quiet as it wants to be. Amp still cost me less than $1,000 with shipping. They do great work in the shop!

Yes....I powered it back up....then it shut down/off after about ten minutes again. The fan is disconnected from the plug.

What a great deal you got! Well maybe ....but why would you think it was the shipping companies fault...?

Yea, if the box was messed I hope you took pictures of it. It's pretty difficult to get anything out of the shipping companies.

Im still waiting for the bench test results as of this post.....but talked w. Brent @ Dr Z and he said it def has to do with the A.C. Side of the amp. could be anything from a lose breaker housing, to the 3 prong cord, to....? you get it. The seller sounds amicable to pay for any repairs needed. But money talks....Just to cover both ends I filed the claim with UPS. More precautionary, but probably isn't needed. This amp is a monster though. very very heavy. I won't add casters cuz I'm a firm believer you lose low end when the rubber feet aren't in contact with the floor. so I'll probably grab or make a custom platform rolling dolly w casters that will be used moving around. From what little I've played through it and by the overall esthetics, this amp has opened up nicely and matured. to me....that's awesome. something money can't buy. I'm stoked and when all these initial quirks are figured out, the legacy of Z will continue.

just heard back from Jeff Snider the "amp man". Just as Brent stated, it was on the AC side.; loose breaker housing connection, and the wires to the transformer were shorting as well. He also said the amp was re-wired to be strictly 4ohm which he stated really short changed the lows, and highs this amp is capable to produce. he put it back to original specs: 16 ohms. also recommended pulling the sovtek El 84's and putting back JJ's. So, I'll have it back Friday July 6th. $100.00 for the bench fee and wiring/ soldering, which the seller should cover.....and $60.00 I'll pick up for the tubes. My country band SteelHorse will appreciate the added genius this Dr Z will contribute to our overall sound. thanks for your input. This is a great forum. Dr Z Player.....forever.

That's good news Curtis, glad to hear you're soon to be re-united with the best amp there is. Might just breathe fire with the tune-up, in a good way. cheers/tom
