Okay, so here's the deal. I've posted about selling my Ghia head to my bandmate, and then missing it pretty much immediately. Not seller's remorse, really--I'm glad he finally has a genuinely great amp--but missing the Ghia's simplicity and tone, which as I've said is kind of like what you'd get if you took just the best (for me) part of the Maz 18's EQ and OD potential and stuck it in a box with only two knobs. Here's where it gets tricky:
1.In the meantime I've picked up a new Monza head from Humbucker--been waiting for one to arrive in red for months. I like the Monza but after a fair amount of tweaking I'm not sure I love it in the way that I (evidently) bonded with the Ghia.
2.I've been thinking I want to give the 1x10 combo thing another shot. Most of our gigs are small to really small, and I've been having back/knee/shoulder problems the last month or so and would like to downsize my gear a good bit. Didn't love the 1x10 with the RF and the Z-28, but I think I probably bailed too early and didn't give the RF sufficient break-in time. Once broken in its mid-heavy voice might be a good fit for the Ghia (let me know if any of you all are using this configuration--I know John wasn't a fan)--and it's certainly loud enough to hold its own with our relatively wimpy band. It's just about an even money exchange, too, so the idea's pretty attractive. Plus, I'd have the 1x10 cab, and if I didn't like it with the Ghia I could try it with the Z-28 again, maybe with a different speaker. So, geeky summer fun!
3.To make matters even MORE complicated, I've consulted with Z-bro maddog (Lee), and he's provided me with his amazing settings for the Monza, which with a clean boost and an overdrive for additional dirt are GREAT with a Strat (haven't tried 'em with the Tele). I was all set to box up the Monza and ship it back, but Lee's magic settings have given me pause.
SO, Z-bros--what should I do? Hang onto the Monza, which I'm liking but maybe not loving (but maybe loving a little bit), or exchange it for the Ghia 1x10, which will make me feel a little less lonesome for my former Ghia, and make things easier for my decrepit old back/knees/etc.?
