M or 8?

Hey guys, I have a Maz18 NR Studio, great amp! Thing is that some of the medium size venues that we play are just tooo small to open her up enough. We mic everything and many times, I'm out of the mix. Last night I played a gig in a cavernous place that was almost church like....had the master and vol on 9:00 and was stil too loud for the mix. At that volume, I'm not even close to getting the most out of the MAZ.
So, I am thinking about trying either an 8 or M12. I'm in a Classic rock band that plays a full range and have a full pedal board. I like to use the amp with low OD and then use pedals as necessary. With the MAZ, I'm really totally clean the way it was set last night. I've tried attenuators and don't like the sponginess they add.
What's your suggestion?

The M12 is supposed to arrive Monday. I'll be able to give you some impressions of it compared with the MAZ 8 sometime next week, I hope!
I anticipate the M12 is going to sound quite different due to the EF86 front end.

I've had a Maz 18 Jr NR since 2002 (along with too much other stuff) and have an M12 coming Tue. My guess is that the M12 may be too loud for what you describe as well because there's not much diff between 12 and 18 watts volume wise. Which attenuators have you tried? There are MASSIVE differences between old school and latest gen models.
