I'm thinking about trying this just to see how much gain will be reduced. Does anyone know which 5751 that comes stock in the Carmen Ghia? I saw somewhere else that a NOS 5751 is the way to go. Any suggestions? In the end, I'll probably leave the 12AX7 in there.

I just looked at the CG, The Doc puts the 5751 in V2, so I suppose it doesn't matter which one he uses in the CG.

Ok, I keep thinking, and that is dangerous. Has anyone put the lower gain 5751 in the PI of their Monza? If so, what were the results? It may be the PI that is really distorting. Thoughts?

Let us know how you like the 5751--I think it'll actually break up sooner than the 12AX7, though, won't it? I dig the Monza, but wouldn't mind an option for a slightly less aggressive breakup.

I have nos 5751's in V1 and V2 of my Monza and it's great! More headroom, clearer tone not just cleaner. It was kinda mushy w/12ax7's in both, especially when I use the brake-lite (almost every gig). 5751's make for great phase inverters (less cross-talk) and less gain in V1 helps expand the the range between semi clean and in yo face as you turn up the volume. Later breakup (less gain is...less) You get to turn it up more...More distortion from power tubes than preamp with lower gain in V1. It still can get plenty dirty...Try it!

Russel, I'd love to know how it worked out if you got the chance to switch tubes. I'll be ordering mine shortly.

I put a NOS 5751 in V1 and a NOS 12AT7 in V2. Definitely lowered the gain and overall volume, which is what I was looking for. I also put a NOS 5Y3 (?) rectifier in which did quite a bit in lowering gain. Not sure if I got that rectifier tube name right, but it is a lower gain rectifier than what was stock in the amp. This combination gives the Monza cleaner headroom, not such a volume spike in the initial range of the volume knob and also lowered the treble. I play a Tele (G&L) so this lower treble is OK. I still wish the volume had more taper in the initial range of the knob, but it is more manageable now.
