More feedback... I realized the amp sounds much better just with a little overdrive pedal. With the greenback I turned way up the gain in my pedals (OCD, KOT & Red Snapper Clones), but now with the gold I prefer turn the Volume up in the amp and...what a tone!!!

Well, I've received the gold yesterday, and this morning I've fitted it in my cab. It's like night & day. Full bass, present mids and clear highs, but NO ICE-PICKING at all!!! Out of box this beast sounds great, If it'll get better.... The MAZ seems another amp, a still better amp!! Thanks for advices my friends!!! Glad you like it. Thats exactly what I thought when I put that gold in mine no more ice pick and it was like a new amp! ;D

You will find with that Gold that sometimes you don't even need any pedals. It is such a rich sounding speaker that when you drive it and it starts to break up you can just use your volume and tone knobs on your guitar and you can go from clean to mean especially for blues and rock tones. With the tone bypass footswitch you can get some nice crunch as well. I agree what a tone. The Gold rules.

For those who've done the speaker swap, how would you describe the difference in sound from the G12H30 to the Gold?
Mine came with the Gold. Our other guitarist has a Maz with the G12H30. They sound very different, and we're wondering how much of that is from the speaker and how much is from tubes and other factors.

I've put a RFT ECC83 NOS in my V1 today, and it's a noticiable improve in the sound. But the Gold changes the sound in a way the tubes can't do. More defined, warm, full, fat, 3D sound and less edgy than my greenback.

I am a big WGS fan...I run my Maz 18 NR with an open back 12" Blackhawk 50 and love it. Lots of sparkle and spank with that speaker. I also have a Reaper HP in a closed back. They make a great combination.

+1 on the WGS ET65. I had one in my Blues Jr and loved it, so I picked up another and replaced the G12H30 in my Maz JR NR combo. I would recommend this speaker to anyone with a Maz. The G12H30 sounded harsh IMHO. I previously owned a Maz 18 Jr Reverb head and an Avatar closed back 1x12 cab with a Celestion Gold. Hated it in the closed back cab. Moved it to my THD 2x12 mixed with a greenback and it sounded awesome. For the $$$$ you can not go wrong with a WGS ET65!!!!

i drank the Kool-aid and replaced the G12H30 with a G12 Gold in my Maz 18 reverb combo.
why did i wait so long to do this? i am usually very skeptical about crap i read in forums....but you Z-talkers are really gaining my trust. The Gold is noticeably richer, sweeter, chimey-er (is that a word?), and smoother highs. thanks for all of the solid advice on this forum!

Indeed, the Gold is in a league all its own. I wish I had had them all along - would have probably prevented the waste of thousands of dollars on perfectly serviceable amps that I ended up selling because they didn't sound quite right. But stick one in a Z amp and all of a sudden you have really got something there.

I have had my Maz Jr NR for a little over a year. It came with the 70th Anniversary G12H-30. It sounded good from day one but it improved further as the speaker broke in. I recently had a 4 month lay off from live playing and when I can't get out and play I tinker instead. I had always wanted to try a Gold in the MAZ but my Boogie playing buddy put me off saying don't mess with the Maz its perfect as is. Watford Valves had a deal on the Gold and temptation got the better of me the G12H came out and the Gold went in. I invited my Boogie playing mate round to try it out. His opinion, "This used to be a great sounding amp. Now it is the best sounding amp I have ever played".
This past weekend I played out on Sat and Sun. On Sat I played the Maz and the drummer and bass player both commented on how great it sounded. On Sun I played a blues jam and used the house bands backline playing through a 65 Blackface Fender Twin. I felt like I was slumming it after the Maz with the Gold. I have played through that Twin a few times and its the first time I have ever found it lacking. And that is purely down to fitting the Gold in the Maz.

I just didn't bond with the Gold. That said, it is a considerably loud speaker and has great lows but the "chime" everyone describes seems fizzy sounding to me. Especially using a neck pickup with the EQ bypass. So, I put a Creamback and it certainly made it less fuzzy and a bit quieter. I think the Maz 18 prefers ceramics rather than Alnico. My $.02. Love this thread.
