This is normal. The Z Wreck is 30 watts but it is class A I believe so it is very loud, like all the Dr Z amps. If you are comparing it to another brand of 30 watt amp, this may be why you are surprised it is so loud. People on the forum sometimes say the 8 Watt MAZ 8 or 5 watt mini Z is too loud so there you go. The only other thing you can do to lower the volume slightly is use the "Comfort" setting on the back. It won't make a huge difference but it will help.
Whatever you do, do not get rid of your Z Wreck right away. Take some time and get used to the sound. Yes it is very loud but you will grow into it. I found a transparent overdrive pedal such as the Wampler Ecstasy (Euphoria) or Timmy pedal are very good to get close to the cranked Z Wreck tone at a reasonable volume. It isn't perfect but pretty close. What I do is turn my Wreck volume up to about 9-10:00 and use 1-2 clicks on the AirBrake. Then hit it with the Timmy or Ecstasy to drive it.
The speaker cabinet is a big part of the Z Wreck sound so at lower volumes, you just don't move enough air. Try the overdrive pedals I mentioned and you should be happy with them.

definitly won't get rid of it, it sounds to good:) was just wondering about the air brake because the review i read said "quiet enough not to wake the kids" i have a son, i woke him up .....lol so i assumed u would be able to crank it and have it really quit. I don't have any experience with attenuaters so figured id check, thanks for the advice

I play with Boss ME 50 multi. If need be, I can always control volume through it.
I know digital and BOSS may both be a bit sacrosanct on this forum.
My Airbrake sounds very good only on 1 at low volumes. If I set it higher, I definitely lose quality tone, IMHO>

My Airbrake sounds good all the way up to 4 and gets a little squishy on the bedroom setting, which is to be expected. Does a great job controlling the volume on my Rt66.

^^^ +1 Go on ebay and buy a cheap used solid state amp. I highly recommend the Vox Pathfinder. 15 watts Great sounding 8" speaker sucks, but there's a jack in the back for hooking up to another 8 ohm cabinet. (kills the internal 8" speaker upon insertion...nice) Very inexpensive Is it a nice Z amp? No, but for about $75 it's great, and you can play it at bedroom levels....REAL bedroom levels. And it will save your tubes.

I would also recommend the Yamaha THR series...the tone from them is amazing, and they make a great portable iPod stereo.

I came here to ask the same question.
I have a rt 66 and airbrake...and even at the max attenuation...it's still freaking loud.
Not sure what else I can do.
I'm thinking its time for a single 10" cab.

Click the Amp Specs link in my signature, then choose the speakers tab down below. You'll see the table that shows the db drops for each setting. Adjectives like bedroom really don't tell enough of the story, but db specs give you enough information that you can decide if things are working ok.
BTW, I was at my local music store when they plugged a Zinky 1-watt amp into a Marshall 4x12 and I'm pretty sure that would have kept my kids up all night too. Many variables here...

I'm thinking its time for a single 10" cab. I practice with my bass player (no drums or PA) using my RT 66 with a 1-12 and an Airbrake at the bedroom setting and max attenuation. It's loud enough for that, so I know it would be too loud for quiet bedroom practice.

For quiet bedroom practice, as John suggests, get a Vox Pathfinder or I like the Roland Micro Cube, with all the effects and amp modelling. I use headphones quite a bit. I run my guitar and microphone through my mixer and crank the mic volume up so I can sing softly, works great and I don't make much noise.

For mega quiet time, I just plug into my mac...I have some good studio monitors and I don't get much latency.
I've just been using an OD and max attenuation with the RT...I don't need bedroom quiet, just trying to be a friendly neighbour.

Neither Z-Wreck nor Route 66 were built for the bedroom... the Air Brake does tame them a LOT but they're still loud stage amps. So either get a Mini Z or Maz 8 or something your Air Brake can really clamp down on for home - or, if you truly want to practice without waking your son, get into modeling. Line 6's model of the Route 66 ("PhD Motorway") is what originally got me into the Z sound, AmpliTube's MAZ 18 is very good (I often use it to record scrap tracks), and: They have a Z-Wreck, too! Go check it out... the Doc himself said that " ikmultimedia did a very nice job"! Put the Z-Wreck somewhere where there's a drumkit it can stand up to and use a smaller amp or even headphones at home.
