Mine has an upgrade to the new transformer - but it was that way when I purchased it from Ben (Club327). I can only go off of vids comparing it to the old tranny, but Todd's description matches what I hear - crisper response and a less 'grainy' overdrive.
I've always thought the Mini would benefit from a Dave B or Frankie S quality demo vid. It seems unfortunately overlooked, especially for those of us trying to quiet down Ghias, Z28s and the like.

I finally had a block of time to myself today! Here're a couple of tracks with the Mini Z w/ Maz 8 transformer I uploaded to Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/theodor-rzad/sets/2014-rough-improv-sketchesThey're both with the 335 straight in, Mini volume at 3:00, attenuator at 0 (off). I used a Zoom H4n off-axis. All variations in breakup are via guitar volume knob and fingers Track One is with a Stagecraft giant 1x12 w/ a Scumback M75 65w w/ FBI (closed back) Track Two is a compact Mather open back (pine) with a Celestion Blue (quite broken-in) Patience with the clams is much appreciated! Feel free to jump around; I'm just improvising and vary the breakup often.

Do all the newer ones with a 10" speaker have this or was it as of a certain date? How would I be able to tell the difference?

I see now that this was introduced in 2012 so my 2011 Mini wouldn't have it.
I'm curious to know what the difference is?

OK, after owning a Mini Z for a couple years, I had been wanting to try the new transformer but I was hesitant to get the mod because I already loved it so much. What if I didn't like it as well after the mod?
So I decided to buy a new Mini Z, with the bigger transformer, so I could A/B them and decide which one I liked best, then sell or return the other. Long story short...I like both and don't think I can give one up!
As for the larger transformer, someone from the Z shop and also someone at Humbucker had told me that it gave a bigger sound but not a "night and day difference." Well I disagree and think it is CERTAINLY night and day in terms of a bigger, fuller sound, with much more bass. It doesn't sound like a 5 watt amp. As a result, I perceive it to be a little bit louder, but whether it actually is or it's just the fullness, I'm not sure. The old transformer is more mid-heavy and thinner sounding.
The overdrive is also much smoother and less "grainy," if you will, although the amount of gain seems the same. All in all, it sounds great.
The only think I don't like about it is that at lower volumes, the extra bass, which is great at higher volumes, seems to dominate the sound. Even with guitar tone maxed out, it's too much bass for me. In these low volume situations, I much prefer the old transformer, as the mid-heaviness helps keep the notes clear and not consumed by low end.

The upgrade isn't available for the 1x8 combo. Won't fit. My old girl is sweet the way she is. I use an LP Jr with her and she is such a dirty girl!

All this is interesting. Did the heads have the new tranny? I have an Attenuated head coming and wondering if it has the upgraded Tranny or not?

I have an attenuated head and it has the "new" larger transformer. Not sure if they all came like that or not. The amp sounds sweet and can sound HUGE if you pair it up with good sized cab and high efficiency driver. Hope you like it!

Thanks for the info, yeah hopefully the one I have coming has the upgraded tranny. Do you know the year of yours. I heard the heads were offered after 2012 and that's around the time of the upgrades.

Serial number beginning with Z would make that a 2015 model

From Doc:
Here's a little bit of info for you guys. I started to serialize amps in 1990. I used the letter A to signify 1990, so A - XXXX would be an amp built in 1990. P - XXXXX would be an amp built in 2005.
DR.Z
A - 1990 B - 1991 C - 1992 D - 1993 E - 1994 F - 1995 G - 1996 H - 1997 I - 1998 J - 1999 K - 2000 L - 2001 M - 2002 N - 2003 O - 2004 P - 2005 Q - 2006 R - 2007 S - 2008 T - 2009 U - 2010 V - 2011 W - 2012 X - 2013 Y - 2014 Z - 2015
