so i'm seriously thinking on getting a Maz 8, however from many of the posts here in forum i'm thinking i just might not have enough headroom for gigging,
so the question then is what if any mods can be done to increase overall volume of the Maz 8?
is the chassis the same as the Maz18jr?
if so couldn't another power tube be inserted when needed?
cheers and thanks for replies
ps; don't want the Maz jr18!

Best mod to increase head room on an 8 is to trade up to an 18. Preamp tubes can make it sound slightly cleaner, but you'll lose volume at the same time.

If you don't need cleans all the way up the board...i.e. your playing style includes some grit....then the Maz 8 is plenty loud. I couldn't get enough clean headroom playing in a band setting, so I traded the chasis and made myself a Maz 18 112 studio combo. Put in a Celestion Century Vintage 12 neo speaker, and now I have a 30 lb monster of an amp.

I think the MAZ 8 works fine in many club settings. "Trick" to getting it to stay clean is to work out a combination of guitar volume knob, amp volume and amp master.
With other MAZ models one can crank the Master and keep Volume low to retain clean headroom. This doesn't work the same on the MAZ 8. (Thanks to Eric "roscoenyc" Amble for pointing out that the 8's single-end design runs its output tube more intensely.) You'll also probably want to keep the tone knobs at noon or below, but that's a matter of taste.
If you have a Brake Lite (or Air Brake) try dialing the amp in with the BL on 3 or 4. Once you get it "optimized" then back off a couple clicks.

^^^ What he said... The maz 8 is a single ended design while the 18 is a push pull design which requires 2(or 4) power tubes.

We somehow failed to mention using the lo input jack. It can help if some of the lack of headroom is due to hitting the front end with a pretty hot signal.

+1. The MAZ18 (especially the NR) sounds *really* good at low volumes. This was me a lifetime ago, playing my MAZ 18 NR with a T-Rex Room Mate in front of the amp (not in the loop), with a Z-Best and my Grosh RC. Volume was barely on as it was very early in the morning and my wife and kids were asleep...all except the youngest kid (4) who snuck up on me and recorded me with his cheap Samsung point-and-shoot camera...
