Have not seen much feedback on the stock tubes that come with the 8, or if folks have sub'd NOS or other flavors in the amp? Thoughts? Anybody find a killer upgrade?

Haven't done any swaps yet. Heck, I'm still getting used to dialing it in!

I got mine in a trade deal, and one of the tubes was noisy. So I tracked it down and swapped it out with one of the same I happened to have lying around.
I am inveterate tweaker, so I proceeded to go through every tube in the amp and I had *nothing* better than what was in there.
Then it went back to the mothership, and in the process got a whole new set of tubes! (The Z guys are great!)
So back I went, and again *nothing* was any better - I tried!
If I decide I want a bit less gain in one stage I may try one of my JAN 5751 tubes in one of the positions, but that ain't too likely.
These guys are at the top of their form. Gotta go with what they are supplying.

ya, when mine went back in for the tranny swap Doc and Don retubed mine too, sounded great when it came back, I don't want to touch a thing although I have been thinking about getting a new set of power tubes, I've got about 20 hours on the amp now, time to have replacements in hand . . . .

For the quality of tube they put in the output section 20 hours is a nice walk in the park. I have spares for mine, but have no plans to swap them in any time soon.

Thanks guys. In my other Z's, I found some spots where NOS significantly improved the tone. But frankly, I haven't even looked at what the 8 shipped with, so I thought maybe I'd get a head start with other's experience. I have found el84's to have the least dramatic impact... But in the preamp section and the PI I'd expect to hear a difference... When I get time to play on that level I'll post it here.

The reissue tung-sol might be a good one to try. As for the power tube I think the preferred series el84 from the tube store would be worth a try.

I emailed Brent and they suggest you use either the NOS 7189 (Russian) or Electro Harmonix EL84
The NOS 7189 is pretty awesome, I have yet to experience the EH
