I sold my Maz Jr NR a while ago and miss the tone. When I used the amp live, it was on the verge of too loud so I used pedals quite a bit to get a full array of tones. I use my guitar volume to vary gain, setting a rhythm tone at about 7 or 8 on the dial. I should also add that we typically mic the amps. I'm in a Classic Rock band that plays everything from bad Co and rush to Badfinger and Beatles.
In thinking about getting back into a Z, I am considering an 8. Given all of the above, should I go 8 or 18? Also, I don't use attenuators..

I vote yes, go for it, especially if you don't use an antenuator although some of the guys here think this amp isn't loud enough to keep up with a drummer. I've personally had no problems keeping up with my drummer and 400 watt bass player but I am also not trying to play super clean either. its a lot of amp for the money and the pentode/triode switch is VERY cool my 2 cents, Todd

The horror...the abject emptiness and loneliness... No Z? how do you take it? Medication? Fenders?I think that 8 would bring about a speedy recovery..

I found, for me, that the 18 "with" the brake-lite is a more versatile amplifier than the 8...having basically the same tone and power to spare when needed. And as the Doc said...the Maz 8 will make the sound guy happy.

A miked MAZ 8 probably will be fine, but let's do a check. Assuming you used the MAZ 18 for the same band, where did you typically set the control knobs to get your base sound without attenuation? Was that sufficient stage volume for you?

I set the master about twelve o'clock an the vol about one.
Just to add, I discussed my options with a retailer and he suggests an 18 with two 10's. Adds a little twist .... He feels that since I play out regularly, the tens cut better than a twelve.

The MAZ 8 set for a similar tone will, obviously, be quieter so if the volume you had was almost always too much, the 8 might work. A 2x10 rig will be a little louder than a 1x12, all else equal. I have a 2x10 MAZ 18 that I'm very happy with.

Back away ten paces and look for while at this . . . . Then consider strongly the Maz8 with a 2-10 configuration.

I guess my biggest fear is getting the 8 and finding that it sounds and feels "small". Mic-ing or not, sometimes an amp just sounds small.
Most of the feedback that I have read says that the 8 sounds like a small version of a big amp....

Maz 8 Head into a stock Z-Best 2x12 (or cab of your choice). Triode/Pentode. High/Low input. footswitch on/off. Add pedals to taste. Mix ingredients to taste and Enjoy!! Thats a recipe for some good times.

The 8 with its pentitode/triode mode is awesome. I wish the 18 had that option the triode mode is wonderful. The 8 may keep the sound guy happy but I don't play for the sound guy I play for the people.

If your only way of monitoring is through your amp I would definitely say the 18. If you are mic'd up and have your own monitor you can get away with an 8. I am a MAZ 18 owner and play with a fairly loud drummer. I use a Palmer PDI to send a signal to the FOH but my only stage monitoring is the 2x12 cab. It is enough for my bandmates and I to hear me but I couldn't imagine going any smaller.

Important point. My bandmates, drummer in particular, have had trouble hearing the MAZ 8 in a live setting unmiked. I could hear it fine, and I'm sure the audience could too, but the room layout and how we needed to set up our gear evidently were responsible. I've used it other times without this issue.
