As a Maz 18 owner who always has had to use an air brake, I'm very tempted by the lower volume of the new Maz 8. The thing that is bothering me is whether or not the Maz 8 has sufficient clean headroom? I mostly jam with friends and sometimes play out with a drummer (small clubs and church). Should I sell the 18 and go with the 8 or continue using my air brake to reign in the 18? I'm a blues-based rock Strat player.
Thanks!

I have a Maz 8 and I still use the brake lite at times, even with a drummer. God bless, Todd

I have both.
For clean headroom I'd stick with the 18. Maybe I'm heavy handed, but on the 8 I start getting some grit or hair on the notes at 10 to 10:30 on the volume knob. Keeping V at or below that level and turning the Master up quite high works pretty well in conjunction with eq settings (low) and possibly using the lo input. Still, I don't think it would keep up with our drummer, who isn't loud.
That said, I like the 8 for gigs, but I don't need a lot of headroom for the bluesy material we play.

Try the master at noon Doc. It seems counter intuitive but w the master open on the single ended amp the power tube is wide open. Cool cleans w the master at noon or just lower.

As a Maz 18 owner who always has had to use an air brake, I'm very tempted by the lower volume of the new Maz 8. ...<snip>... I'm a blues-based rock Strat player. I am an occasional electric player who had an 18 and now has an 8. The 18 only got to what I call touch-sensitive at higher levels, necessitating a power soak for the bulk of my playing. The 8 is to me touch-sensitive at every setting I have ever used, and still does what I call clean up to a very satisfying SPL. That you describe yourself as a blues-based rock player makes me believe that you may well be as thrilled by an 8 as I am. Is there any way you can get your hands on one for a few minutes? That'll tell the tale for sure :-)

Nice tip Eric! the more I play with this amp the better it gets. I've been playing thru my klon klone at lower volumes and it really adds some girth. Of course then I switch that off and try to dial in the same sound without...
Anybody just playing straight into it? I'm curious what the KOT sounds like with it?

I'm curious what the KOT sounds like with it? Works very well for me. I have the original v4, not the high-gain option. I have the yellow side set with fairly low gain, so it's mostly a volume boost with a little bit of brightness added. The red side is fairly cranked and provides great OD (it's own plus pushing the MAZ 8). Both sides turned on is turbocharged. A challenge for me is, which I'm still working on, is getting the "right" (for me) balance between clean headroom and output volume.

Thanks for the info, gents! It looks like I need to give an 8 a try.

Thanks Mike, I just got the notice that I'm able to get one (KOT) now I just have to figure out where to snag some $$... C-Squared - buy it, you'll like it! Get the brake lite and keep your spouse happy tho...

I would say the Maz 8 has a bit of clean to be had for at home use, but not for stage use. Even at home volumes it has bark sneaking into the clean. EZG 50 has some CLEAN

the low input helped me out on stage last night with the Les Paul into the Maz 8.
