Played a gig last night with my old amp (Blackstar HT20 combo) and because of bad stage acoustics - we had a low ceiling of about 8ft over most of the band and we were up against a wall behind us - I had to turn the amp up above the normal halfway to hear myself at all. This was with the amp leaning back on a stand too. So I started worrying that my Maz 8 combo that hasn't arrived yet (see the other thread) might not quite be enough.
Then I had the thought that perhaps the answer might be to get a used Maz 18 head and run that into the Maz 8 combo, just using the Maz 8 as a 1x12 cab, when I need more headroom. Would this work? Has anyone done it? My 8 is the compact Studio version with a Blue in it.

Pretty sure you should be OK with this. There is some concern that the MAZ 18's potential output exceeds the Blue's rating. I think there's been some discussion of that in the MAZ 18 section. Iirc, the conclusion was it should be fine provided you don't dime every knob on the 18, or something to that effect.
A quick call or email to the Z factory will give you a definitive answer.

First off, I'd try to avoid the worry part. You have a plan and a backup plan, so get back to being excited about getting a Maz8 - they are awesome!
That being said, There are at least two people out there with Maz18 studios. Two sets of folks that I know of so far have traded chassis between 8 and 18 setups, and both of the original 8 owners began with studio setups.
So I know that at least Brian who posts here is presently running a Maz18 Studio with a blue. I know he's very happy with it, and perhaps he'll chime in.

Thanks. I am VERY excited about the amp arriving, even though I don't have an ETA yet. Waiting for the magazine reviewer to send it back to the shop!
I spent a long time comparing the 8 to the 18 and I'm pretty sure I made the right choice. It was just a bad gig experience generally last night as I was tired and played poorly and the acoustics were difficult. I'm sure most of us have had nights like that...

Yes, some gigs just are bad experiences sonically. One place we used to play was dubbed the "acoustic toilet" by a band member.
Depending on how your band approaches sound systems, putting a mic on the MAZ 8 and mixing it into front of house (and monitors maybe) will let you have good tone and reasonable stage volume in larger venues.

Putting a mic on the 8, when I eventually get it, is certainly part of the plan. Although I'm hoping I won't need to also put it through the monitors. We generally have a very low stage volume by the standards of this kind of band (rock/ pop covers) but sometimes you are just fighting a room and things get out of hand.

Maz 18 Studio with a blue sounds awesome. As long as you don't run everything wide open constantly you should be fine. If the speaker starts farting out, you know you are pushing too much. A single blue will handle the 18, just not wide open full time. That being said, the 8 was loud enough in my band setting. It just didn't have enough clean headroom for my band. If you play with a little dirt...pentode mode with the eq bypass will get you anywhere you need with the 8.

Now that I've got the 8 and played it a while, I think there will be plenty of headroom for my not quite clean playing. In fact, it's amazingly loud.
I have a band rehearsal next week and then a gig the week after, so that will be the test!

The rehearsal was fine, even on Triode mode. I played Sweet Child of Mine with the volume and master both on 2 o'clock and the EQ bypass engaged and it was SWEET and LOUD. Had the volume on the guitar down at 6 or 7. I never really liked the EQ bypass when practising at home but in a full band setting (2 guitars, bass, keys, drums, vocals) it just made the amp sit in the mix really nicely.
