Just finished watching the second half of that show. It was good for the most part. The duet with Shemika Coleman and Gary Clark Jr was good. His version of "Catfish Blues" sounded just like Jimi's with less histrionics. The All Star jam with Beck and Guy turned into a cutting contest which Jagger jumped in and broke up singing over. The ending jam with Beck, Clark Jr, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, BB, Buddy Guy, and Warren Haynes was okay, too but kinda sterile. At the end they cut to BB doing "Thrill" and it was uninspired and bastardized by the band backing him. He looked annoyed with the band and very sickly in appearance. Granted he's no spring chicken but he's not looking well. The band behind him made that song percussive and soulless. It lacked any of the space that made the original a signature tune.
I was surprised by the Tedeschi/trucks performance with Haynes b/c I've always felt like Warren played too much and Derek nods to Duane more copycatish than original variation. They both played tasty, complimentary leads during the song that never crowded the vocal and really added to the spirit of the tune. the most understated performance was Keb Mo's. He had a great tune with fresh chord voicings and the thread of blues tinging the song.
Lastly, I have to say I honestly don't know why Jeff Beck and Mick Jagger were there b/c they both seemed really out of place amongst the bands. Everyone else seemed authentic and the two of them, love them in their own right as I do, didn't really vibe with the goings on. Mick's voice is no longer what it was and the Beckisms didn't fit Five Long Years. Maybe that's why Buddy was playing over him.....
Catch it when you can on your local PBS station. It's funny to see a line of amps 25 ft long with plexiglass in front of all them.
