So, when am I going to see the Matt-o-caster? Your amps are calling you matt!!! I have your Ghia and Kendrick!!! :-)
I guess I won't have them much longer once your house addition is complete. I'll only have my Z's to play with.
Well, give me a call... maybe Sunday if your not watching The Pats game. :-)

IMO, the ultimate finish for tone is what they call a "french polish." Google it if you've never heard of it. It's pretty labor intensive, though.
When I build my own axe, I'm going to use a finish called "tru oil"-- which is legendary for gun stocks and makes a nice finish. It's an oil-based finish with a waxy feel to it.
If you've ever held a nice custom wood riflestock, then you know how nice this stuff is. It gives a beautiful gloss and doesn't have the sticky feel of a poly finish or even sometimes nitro.
The downside is that everything will just be a dark brown color, ala Alembic or something. NO real color choice.
It's ok with me, I think a riflestock brown color can look really good with some gold hardware.

I guess I never posted a pic of the finished tele. I never really cleaned it since I finished it, so I'll have to take some better pictures and post them after I polish it. Anyway - heres some I took right when it was finished -
