I have a Carmen Ghia and am looking at a used Route 66. I'm wondering how the bass and treble controls on the 66 actually work. Up to noon they're normal tone controls...but then what? I know they add gain but how does that really work?
I guess what I'm asking is: does more treble/bass get added along with gain when they're pushed past noon? What if I liked the EQ balance of treble at 9 o'clock and bass at 11 o'clock but I wanted a bit of gain with that? Set T at 2 and bass at 4? I'm confused!

To my experience, when you turn the tone controls above noon, you are selectively adding gain in that frequency area. More gain to the treble area or more gain to the bass.
I don't think that it is simple as going from 9:00 to 2:00, etc. Use your ears and tune it to what sounds best to you. My suggestion is to close your eyes and don't look at the knobs. Just dial in what sounds good. You might be surprised. It is a simple amp to dial in, like your Ghia.
When I crank the treble gain, I tend to set it to a place where I want it and then I float the bass and volume to match the room.
FWIW, most of the time, I use the 66 as a Jazz amp. Tone controls on 9:00 and volume at noon. With my 335 and my Z-Verb, it is heaven.

I was using my 66 as a rock machine. Vol - 3-5 o'clock Tre - 4-5 o'clock Bas - 4-5 o'clock

I've had a Maserati and I would say that it had more tonal flexibility than the 66. I find the route tone knobs more subtle tweaks than tone knobs. The route IMO is a one trick pony with lots of subtle options. It's a better trick that the Maserati could do.

So here is how I figured out my 66. I turn all 3 knobs all the way up, and then I turn each one back to the volume, tone, and level of dirt I want. I then turn the volume up louder than I want and the volume on the guitar back a notch or two.
I simply found dialing up to the right tone and volume too time consuming so I simply dial down. It helps me find where the tube compression is best quicker. The 66 is the most under rated amp in the Dr. Z line.

Great info, guys. Thanks. One last question...if I dial the tone controls to, say, 4 o'clock but volume at bedroom level, will there be some dirt in the tone or will I also need some big volume to hear some gain?

Without an Air Brake, you won't get bedroom volumes with dirt with this amp. If you hook up an Air Brake, then it is a different story altogether. You'll get the dirt at a manageable level. You'll probably loose some of the breathy smoothness of the amp, but it'll work. If you have the tone controls on 4:00, I'd say that once you turn the volume from all the way off to just a hair on, it'll be loud at home - at least to my ears.

You will have a bit of dirt, but not as spectacular as the amp giving up some power tube clipping too. An attenuator will be your best bet. I almost think of the treble tone control as a treble boost pedal. A Beano Pedal from Analogman for example doesn't really sound that great until it can push the whole amp into gear.

DC here! To my ears it seems with the Treble control that: 1) Between 8 to 12 o clock - you get more treble and a slight increse maybe in volume. 2) Between 12 to 16 o clock - you get more volume more sustain and distortion and you get a less treble or maybe just more middle. However the amp sounds mellower to me. Cheers: Dixiechicken!
