I bought a quartet for my 220VAC Senior head from a music store in Germany, at least 2 of them were bad righ out of the box, put 'em in and they started cherrying up and humming loudly. Got to 440hz outside of Milano, bought a set of JJ's, workin' like a champ. Or at least a Princeton.

TAD's seemed a little brighter and didn't seem to last as long as the JJ's (based on two sets of TAD's)

Buddy, how long do your el84s last in your MAZ? Hard to say how long they last, I usually put a fresh quad in my UK-based MAZ Senior at the beginning of a new tour (usually 15 or so dates in a van turned up all the way every night) and leave them til midway through the next one, or whenever they start to sound a little weak/thin, whichever comes first. The Groove Tubes #6's, and later the JJ equivalent after GT sold out to Fender seemed to hang in there for a good while, never shorting or cherrying up, just wearing out normally. But I was really disappointed in the TAD's, after spending 65 Euros on a quad in Germany that never made it through initially powering the amp up, then trying to persuade the store I bought them from to warranty them and send a set of equivalent GT's, problem with that was a pair of GT's cost as much as a quad of TAD's, so I never got right w/ the store, I have 65 Euros of store credit next time I'm in Hamburg I guess! Where would we be if it wasn't for the exemplary customer service we have all come to know and love from all at Dr Z amps?

I recently Retubed my EL84 quad Stangray with TAD's and i was thoroughly happy with them. They took some of the Shrill out found in the JJ's out and gave it more of an aggresive response which I like. But Tubes are tubes, bad batch, everyones ears are different etc... I did get long life out of the JJ's I also Run a small fan on the back of my amps Remedy Ray and my SRZ has a Factory Fan, Running cooler prolongs tube life in my Opinion. Good luck with the purchase, as long as they are very closely matched they should be fine I would say.

I agree bought TAD's from Mike at KCANOS and they were matched perfectly and have worked out splendidly. They're the cheapest there, for a quad.

I currently have a matched quartet in my Matchless HC30. It'll be 2 years this April and they're still going. I've gigged a couple times a month and practice 3-4 hours a week. Great change from my experience with GT and JJ's. Went through 3-4 sets of those in this amp in no time!
