Hello all - my first post here and looking to purchase my first Dr. Z soon. I'm pretty set on the Maz 8! I'm trying to decide on the speaker option for the Studio Combo. Brian at Humbucker Music has suggested the G12H30, but I haven't read many posts about it. I have read good things about the Blue, which I have learned will require some break-in time. Brian also mentioned he runs a Maz Jr combo with G12H30 + cab with Blue "and it is awesome". I'm interested in something like that, but there might be some times when I won't feel like taking the extra cab with me to rehearsal/gig, so I'm wondering which option for the combo and which for the cab? My two main guitars are a Taylor T3/B and American Strat with double humbuckers - both have coil-splitting capability - so I play with single coils as well. Please let me know your opinions, advice - that would greatly help in making my decision so I can finally get my order in - I'm very anxious to join the club...

Welcome spaceguitar! The Blue was Doc's first choice for this amp, and I'm sure the G12H30 sounds great too. If I were you and looking to run an extra cab at times, you might want to consider the Maz Jr. Same awesome sound...plus some extra power to spare. Good luck~

I bought mine with a blue. I think it still needs some break in time. In the mean time I swapped it out and put in a g12h30 in it. I think the g12 sounds fuller and has some more bass to it than the blue. I am a single coil player for the most part, and I found that the g12 was a more friendly speaker in this amp with single coil guitars. The Maz 8 sounds AWESOME with any guitar with buckers that I have plugged into it. I don't use this as my regular gigging amp. I have a Maz 18 with a V30 and G12H30 and another Maz 18 with the above mentioned, G12H30 and a Blue in it. They both sound amazing.
Get the amp with either speaker...then add a cab with the other one. Stellar amp with stellar sound either way. If you mainly play with your buckers engaged, either speaker will be fine...just be ready to turn some knobs if you switch to single coils. If you play mainly with single coils, I prefer the G12h30. Gives you a little more round sound.
Good luck on your quest for tone and welcome to the forum.

For some reason the blue in the amp was cheaper than getting the blue as the extension speaker, i don't remember how much difference, maybe about 80 dollars, and since i was always going to play them together i got the blue in the amp and the G12H30 in the convertible speaker cab, this was for a Maz jr. I like the G12H30 in the closed back extension and it really holds the bottom nicely. If you think you will play them together most of the time and if it is still cheaper in that configuration, it might be the way to go for the Maz 8

Thank you all for the replies! What I'm looking for with the two speaker/extra cab configuration is the best of both worlds - the warm top end of the Blue and bass response of the G12H30 - just sounds like a pretty sweet combination and I could play it alone with either speaker. I'm set on the Maz 8 because of the differences between it and the Maz 18 Jr - the lower wattage for recording, the pentode/triode functionality, and the reverb. I'm not ruling out getting a Maz Jr someday in the future - it's what I was planning before the Maz 8 came along. I believe I've decided on getting the G12H30 in the combo because I think I'll be happier with the bass reponse. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
