Got my Z Wreck yesterday and it just sounds awesome. The videos do not show how the harmonics and overtones just sing from this amp. Wow.
Anyway, I know the Doc uses some very specific and NOS tubes for this amp. Any idea if Dr Z will sell replacement sets because let's face it, these tubes aren't going to get any cheaper or easier to get. I would hate to put a set of other tubes in it and cause the amp to not sound as it was factory new.

Thanks for the link KeithA, I had wonders about this myself.
Anyone know about replacing the 12ax7 preamp tubes with something other than the Tung-sol that come in it? Not to sound like a cheap-skate, but would regular ol' Groove tube 12ax7s work alright?

^^^ Try your Groove tubes and let us know what you think. I replaced the 5AR4 in mine to a NOS Mullard ( just for durability, reliability and piece of mind ) but, have had no reason to try any other tubes....sounds great to me as is. Congrats on your new 'Wreck bryan...and welcome to the forum you guys.

I too have had the same thoughts about my Z-Wreck. I would buy a spare set of tubes identical to those it came with if they were available.

I will give Dr Z a call Monday and post their response to this thread. Thanks! It would be great if you could get a valve kit from Dr Z directly.

Opened my amp today and it has Groove Tube 12AX7s in V1-3. Would these be original in a 10-12 (manufacture date)amp? If I order Tungsols do I want gold or regular?

Never mind. I answered my own question. Replaced the Groove Tubes with Tungsols. World of difference. Crisp and defined. Nice.

Any idea if Dr Z will sell replacement sets because let's face it, these tubes aren't going to get any cheaper or easier to get. I would hate to put a set of other tubes in it and cause the amp to not sound as it was factory new. FYI, Dr Z posted in the News and Tube section informing Z Users that I have available the correct 6n14n power tubes that he is using in the Z Wrecks. As far as preamp tubes, mine came stock with the Tung Sol's in V1,2,3. I have a bunch of strong NOS (all of the cool ones from the late 50's through the early 70's), and of course have tried them in my Z wrecks. I'll tell you, the NOS tubes weren't an improvement, those Tung Sol's that my Z Wreck's came with sound killer. Each NOS I tried sounded a bit different, and sure someone might prefer an Amperex or Mullard or whatever, but not because they are better, just different, and subtle at that. Rectifiers, you could drop $150+ on a NOS, or $80+ on a nice low mile Mullard but its not necessary. Carry a Solid State GZ34 plug-in rectifier as a back up and have a spare glass one at home. Or, drop the cash on a Mullard, but just because you paid $150 doesn't mean it ain't gonna get rattled in that combo. Combo's vibrate, they get bumped around, I'd hate to tell someone they need one and have it fail on them. In a head, ya, Mullards are dope... in a combo, only if you won't cry if it fails. Back to this Russian 6n14n that Dr Z uses, his friend Ken Fischer used those in Trainwreck Rockets, the Amp that inspired the Z Wreck. It is a really fine sounding EL84, and IMO the best sounding 84 available (for less than $400 a quad). It has full and sweet tone with a really pretty top end. Crank on it and it will get aggressive, focus up and sing.. back off and the cleans are awesome, very musical. In some amps a more aggressive and edgy tube may fit better, but in the Z Wreck.. peas and carrots.

DC here!
I have 10 Telefunken EL84's from the nineteenseventies - ( my stereo amplifier building days )
Any body know if they would work fine im my Z-Wreck combo???
( I have no clue whether they are matched in any way - most likely not )
Does anybody have an opinion on theese would work in my Z-Wreck??
Cheers: Dixiechicken!
