Hey guys, im looking at switching my Maz 18 for a Ray. Is a 2x12 cab a must have for the ray or will a 1x12 work? I have seen a few threads about different speakers in each, but is the real difference between the number of speakers the volume? Or am i completely wrong?
Thanks!

My opinion: A Ray with one speaker is plenty loud. Adding a second speaker will not double your volume, just add some fullness (and weight)... A Ray with a single Celestion Gold is a sound to behold! Two speakers always sound better to me, but not all that much....If it's just gonna sit in yer studio, go for two....If ya gotta tote it gig to gig, go with a single speaker cab....

Here is another vote for the 1x12 Gold - great tone! I'll second that--Mike's 'Ray thru a 1x12 Celestion Gold sounds absolutely stellar.

I agree with the folks here, gigging the ray with a 1x12 cab works great. A 2x12 cab offers more sonic diversity. For instance the ray into a stock Z-Best cab is a rock'in machine! 2 blues or 1 blue & 1 gold is a thing of beauty. If you're the dude loading in and out a 1x12 cab allows the ray to work it's magic. The volume aspect can be controlled by the sensitivity of the speaker you choose. The ray will be plenty loud with a gold, which is very efficient. I prefer a less efficient speaker so I can crank the ray's volume up and use less airbrake. 4 el84's create a lot of power in my opinion and the ray's got the potential for a huge low end thud factor. That said, my gigs are primarily in local clubs that don't allow a 50w amp to do it's magic. YMMV

So it would essentially a z best ,a 1x12 gold, and 2x12 blues for the same price. this will take a while to decide... Thanks for the help so far everyone.

Go with the 1x12 with a Gold. Expand from there if you want.
The 1x12 gold is lighter and cheaper for the gigging musician. Make sure the cab is open back.

I'm a weekend player in small to mid-size bars - another vote for a 1x12 open-back with a Gold. That's what I'm using along with an Airbrake - and I've yet to plug into the 'hi' input, have always used the 'lo' input on the Ray - for more than a year now. If I ever went with two 12's, I'd use two 1x12 cabs and I'd separate them - course, there's never enough room to do that properly.

I'll put another vote in for the 1x12 Gold in an open back cab. Great match.

Ray and a 112 gold. Also, Ray with a Zbest is killer too. Different strokes for different folks. Enjoy.

My Analogy of The Ray and Speaker selection 1x12 GOLD= WOW!!! AMAZING
2x12 GOLD -GH30 HOLY S#!& AMAZING
4x12- GREENBACKS TONAL BLISS!!!!!!!! The Ray sounds great with almost any speaker IMHO I think For my Ears Golds, GH30's work the best with that amp However my 12-65's sound mighty tasty too!

Played a stang yesterday. Sounded good but kind of... i dont know how to describe it.. thin? Maybe its just my playing or the fact that im used to playing a Maz 18 with a lot of reverb.

Another thing to add is that if your Stang Ray is mic'd at gigs then a 2nd speaker is unnecesary. If it's typically not mic'd then a 2x12 will simply add more shape and direction to your tone, but not necessarily volume.

What speaker are using with the Ray? Also Remember the Cut Works Backwards as you turn it clockwise it sounds Darker. Just expeiriment with it using your ears not where the knob pointers are set. The Ray and Maz are totally different . The Ray took a bit of tweaking for me , I didnt like with the Blue Clestions in my 2x12 cab way too thin for me. Im a Meat and Potatoes tone guy. The Ray delivers all of that and then some with the right Speaker guitar effects setup. Keep us posted, Jamie
