Let me start by saying I love my Maz 18 212 NR Combo. I was looking for something with a little more cleanish headroom. My forum research, and several recommendations led me here...to the Ray. I got a great deal on a 212 combo with blues and it got to my home today. It is used (or should I say broken in) but it nearly took my head off....WOW! Clean with a little grit to it. Loud, percussive, articulate. Just what I have been looking for to pair with my Maz 18. I am going to try a Blue and a G12H30 together in this combo. I have one of my Maz 18's set up like this and it honks!!! One question. How do I tell what ohm the speakers are with the blues....they don't seem to say anywhere on them. Does the Ray come standard with 8 ohm Blues? The cable is coming out of the 4 ohm output from the amp. My initial guess would be 8 ohms...but I don't know the guy I bought it from (ebay)...and it's possible it was hooked up wrong when I got it. I just don't want to mess anything up on it if I start swapping speakers...I want to wire them up correctly. Is there a way to find out??? Serial number possibly?

I'd leave it with a pair of blues. I didn't like the G12H30 with my 'ray. The blue/G12H30 is a nice combo for the maz jr....but I really didn't like the H with the ray.
Check the inside of the speaker cone. sometimes it's written there.

Congrats on the new amp. The ray is a very cool amp. I say make the speaker swaps if you want to try things out, but ultimately, I'm with John, it is tough to beat a pair of blues in the ray. I tried several different pairings and single 12s, nothing really captured it like the blues. A single gold is a close second. Just my opinion.

you will need an ohm meter to check the ohms, if it came from DrZ its an 8ohm ans tying the second in paralell will give you a 4 ohm load. The Ray sounds killer with the GH30 I use mine with a gold and a Heritage GH30 which is a RI of the original greenback type. Congrats!!! it only get better as you play it more ;D

I have a ohm meter. How do you check that....put a contact on each side of the speaker tab??? Sorry if that's a dumb question...

Put it across the terminals after the speaker has been disconnected from the amp, or other speakers. It should read a bit less than the actual ohm rating because you are testing impedance rather than resistance (if I remember correctly). An 8 ohm speaker should read in the 6.? area instead of 8 so don't worry that there is something wrong with the speaker when this happens.

Now for the real scoop. I got to play on this thing this weekend and I like it alot. I got to actually listen to another guitar player on this amp before I used it. We showed up to our venue and found out we were double booked with another band. The club owner made a mistake and both bands ended up playing. We ended up swapping sets with the other band. Since we were going to be at the same place the next night, we set up our equipment and they just used our stuff. The guitar player from the other band normally uses a BadCat amp, but he asked if I cared if he used the Ray. I told him to go for it. He went from tele country picking to .38 Special with about 4 pedals and the Ray. It sounded great out front.
I used my Maz the first night and the Ray the second night. I had to do some pedal tweaking to dial in kinda what I am used to hearing (from the Maz). It was nice. I could hear the sounds (tone) that I hear when I listen to Brad Paisley stuff. I can't wait to use this amp more over the coming weeks.

Nice! Welcome to the club. Not sure how old your power tubes are but if your playing the ray a lot and the magic seems to be waning... a new set of power tubes make a difference.

After a few shows, I'm not sure I'm digging the blues. Thinking about changing some speakers....any suggestions?
I play country and some southern rock. I use the amp, mostly clean with some hair and pedals to really shape sounds / get grungy. The blues sound a little too middy for my taste.
Thanks for any input.

I don't care for the Blue as a stand alone speaker and I suspect that would hold true for two Blues as well (not a mids thing however). I paired my Blue with a 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog in a 2x12 cab and it was a big improvement. I'm also a fan of the single Gold in a 1x12 with the Ray but neither combination might address your mids issue.

Brian I really like G12H30's with the Maz series.....The Blues CAN whack you with too much mids..... The G12H30 is nice on the top, and has a strong, tight low end......some pair the V30 up with the G12H30 in 2 x 12's...

The Ray is so simple. Yet sounds so Big and Rich. It yeilds tones from spanky clean to big crunchy Overdriven tones when pushed. Its an amp that will make you ask yourself....... Why haven't I had one of these sooner. There are a few on the BST for sale ;D

Yes When I use My Ray &2x12 Cab I always Mic My Ceramic Speaker which is the Heritage GH30 and I always mic it just to the lower right or left of the Voice Coil or center of the Speaker. I dont know if this is correct but the sound man always does the same help if there is a better way, I have seen some wierd mic setups, one being one in the front of speaker and one behind an open back cab, What is the logic there? ambience?

I know a guy that only mics it from in the back of the cab...not sure why.

I briefly experimented with trading one of the Blues in my cab with an EVM12L. I was awesome. Super tight bottom end and very linear response. The Blue is the speaker with the color and the flab, while the EVM plays the straight man.
Alas, I sold the EVM and put the original Blue back in the cab. I love the sound of a pair of Blues, but a mix of a Blue plus a loud, clean speaker is something really special.

Howdy,
Congrats, Brian! Never had the pleasure of playing a 'Ray, but I'll bet they're more fun than M&Ms.

The Ray is a great amp. Sounds great by itself or with pedals. To my ears...it breathes life into single coil guitars. Shounds good with buckers, but excellent with singles. I admit, I am biased to the country tele thing....but this amp shines in every setting.

And I agree - the Ray does something special with single coils. So much so that I converted one of my HH guitars to SSS. Just pure bliss with singles (including P90s, too!).
