Well...I took delivery of the mightly little Maz 8 yesterday. After much anticipation! I've been playing through my Remedy mini-stack and Z Wreck lately so when I first plugged it in I was a bit underwhelmed- I don't know what I was thinking... After several more hours I realized this amp is exactly what the Doc designed it for...Doh! "The Maz 8 is a full featured 8 watt amp that will give you an incredible range of shimmering cleans to full on rock action at reasonable volume levels."To me, this amp excels at low volume levels. Great Maz cleans! It also has WAY more gain available than my Maz 18 NR. I also LOVE the Triode mode. So sweet. The size of this little thing and the angled front is awesome. I can't wait to get more hours on this Blue. ;D Great job Doc!!

Looking good, Mark. Congrats on the amp and the Collings! It's a beautiful guitar. Bet it sounds stellar through all your amps.
As they develop, send me some MAZ 8 tone settings that you like, and I'll put them on the chart.

You captured that moment, the box arrives, it looks in great shape, and then you open it and it is stunning and all that you had been hoping it would be, best of luck with the "8".

I've been playing the heck out of this little amp and it's sounding better and better! The low end is starting to show up now....it was a little late- I was playing the 290 and Les Paul thru it till today and as expected, Tele into Maz sounds great. Def cleaner than the other 2 guitars. Also I played it thru a 1-12 cab w/ Gold and that brought the low end out...BIG time! Lovin' the footswitch boost feature. Although I do wish it had a activation light on it....

Mine came in today as well. Black w/ S&P Grille. Really nice and I can only echo your sentiments: sexy; great cleans; more gain than I expected; is doing really well at low volumes; triode mode is amazing.
Sadly though, my reverb tank was somehow torn loose from its moorings in transit... so I unboxed it to discover some tiny wood scraps in the back. A bit of a bummer. Also, had the Humbucker Music folks add in a Brake Lite for me — which was rattling like a MoFo on low notes. Added some reinforcing foam though. Seems to be helping. And my Hi-Gain input started acting weird too. Might be a jack/cable connection issue though — not sure yet. Randomly started losing gain/volume while playing earlier... but was fine when I switched to Lo... and fine when I plugged back into high. Strange.
Can't wait to spend some more time with it tomorrow.

Hey Crxsh sounds like your MAZ 8 had a ruff ride to your house. Maybe it was used in a crash test,..... just joking. Strange because Humbucker normally double boxes any amp shipped. Was yours double boxed?
Our cabs are built out of house but this is the first time I have heard of wood scraps in the cab , I would love to see a pic .
Also this is the first time someone reported that there Brake-Lite was improperly installed and rattled, I'll need to check with Humbucker as they installed it.
Well this is not how I wanted you to recieve your new amp, and if there are any added concerns or issues please call me and I'll rectify them, 216 475 1444.

(Good one!) The 8 was packed very nicely, actually. Looks similar to Mark's 2nd pic there — not double boxed, but reinforced with extra cardboard on the sides and Instapack foam on the top and bottom. There were a couple of suspect corner dings though... so it may well have had a couple of healthy jostles en route. Upon further inspection, it seems the screw holding down the left side of the reverb tank was ripped out somehow. So the "tiny wood scraps" (perhaps overstated, it was just a few small splinters) were the result of that. I just moved the screw a bit further to the left and it seems to be fine. Speaking of... is this a different reverb tank than you use in the Maz 18? The reverb sounds deeper on the 8 — something I quite like. Anyway... I felt around in by the Brake Lite and there was a slight separation on the right side where the adhesive mounting was. I loosened the screws, cut a couple of small pieces of foam and wedged them in there... seemed to help. I'll continue to monitor that situation and get in touch if it remains a problem. Thanks! Nick

Nick [/quote] Yes Nick it is a new reverb tub, it is a MOD unit from Antique Electronics. My friend Orin nugged me to try them and I was impressed. Much better constructed and better sounding. Like you noted deeper, less Boing and more depth. The older Accutronics units went through a myrid of changes and multi owers , they are now owned my a Korean company. For the longest time they got away with shabby units , because they were the only game in town. Well not any more. FYI these MOD units can be purchased from Antique Electronics and are drop in replacements. I don't have the exact part number here at home , but later I will post the p/n from the shop. DR.Z

Sorry for the hi-jack,
Doc, is this tank something that could fit into my Maz JR 2008 vintage, and would it have said deeper sound?
Thanks, Tom
(cool amp the Maz 8, want one, just not cash flowing at the moment... )

My brother-in-law lives in a condo and would like to have a 'nice' amp. I've been hinting that this Maz 8 may be the ticket.

Nick As a followup to this — it is the Brake Lite that's rattling. Not unbearable, but pretty significant playing lower notes with the bass turned up and/or with much volume. I pulled it... no rattle. Put it back in... rattle. I skimmed off the (now useless) adhesive foam and tried mounting it directly on the side of the cab and that helped some, but it is still there, I think. Might be tolerable, but if it does bug me, I'll have to find some way to try and stop that. Still loving this thing though. Sounds so good.

^^^
Is the BL rattling caused by parts internal to the BL being loose, or is something going on with the mounting in the cab?

That's weird. I have about 5 BL and none rattle. if they did I would take them out, tighten everything up and re-install nice and tight.

Post by crxsh on Dec 9, 2011 8:23:02 GMT -7
I'm starting to think that it might be something inside the BL. Especially now, it doesn't seem like there's any room for the housing to be rattling.
