I'm interested in maybe picking up a cheap PRS SE Soapbar II Maple. I tried one, and liked the feel, weight and playability of the guitar. Pups sounded okay, nothing earth shattering. But they were NOISY in pos. 1 & 3. I've been playing noiseless singlecoils, and have been spoiled. Plus, this was just playing through the store supplied Fender Blues DeVille and Peavey Classic 30.
One thing I love about my Rt.66 is how quiet the amp is...would it be enough to tame the Seymour Duncan Soapbars in this guitar? Do the Lollar soapbar pickups provied a quieter, better sounding replacement option?

Actually, I have a pair of old Bartolini "P-90s" with no place to put them.....
I went on a Barto binge a few months ago, thinking I could drop them into something lying around. Maybe I too should consider this PRS? Never really thought about it before. Is it a decent axe for the $$?

I had one and it wasn't bad at all. Sold it to buy my ghia. Needed a string upsize and the pickups are noisier than usual for p90 (hot maybe?), but otherwise ok. Construction was first rate.
I prefer the p90 Godin LG, however, They didn't have one available when I got mine. It has better pickups (real SD p90's) and a nice neck (bolt-on though). I also prefer the tuneomatic style bridges.

Most of the stores I've been in have flourescent lighting. The Gibson p-90's I have pick up that kind of hum and then it's increased through the amp. The same pups away from those lights maybe louder than most, but by design that is the compromise for such hot and snarling pups.

Thanks for that Godin mention. I've got a Seagull acoustic for beating around, and for the money it's a great guitar. I'll check out the Godin site for their P90-equipped stuff.

I've had a couple guitars with P-90's and they always seemed to be too dark and pick up a lot of noise. Since I play out a lot, and I don't get to pick the joints I play in, about 1/4 of the time I'd be somewhere that the P-90's just didn't work in. I've read there are P-90's that work better, but I never found them in time to save those guitars. They are all sold or converted now...

I may be wrong, but I thought I heard/read somewhere that the Lollar soapbars are fairly quiet. The Godin is a nice suggestion...I had forgotten about that one. Another one I'm lookin at is this: Also the single cutaway version with Revtron pickups looks cool. I've never had a guitar with that filtertron sound...my band plays a bit of swing/rockabilly,,,might be a cool get also.

I've heard good things about the Reverend guitars.....kinda funky, but that could be a bonus.

I'm having trouble not buying one of their new imports with the double P90s. Smaller all wood body is an improvement and cheap!

Where or how can I compare different P-90's. I really like Neil Young's sound. Crazy Horse to Greendale he uses those, I think. I have a solid Mahogany LP style guitar with, what I'm told, gibson P-90's. They are a little dark, but at higher volumes on my Mazerati that is not so noticable. I also use a beano boost which really wakes up the tone for lead stuff. How do I know what's really in this guitar, and do I just have to put something else in there before I really know what I might be missing? I keep hearing about the Lollars, but $200 dollars is an expensive gamble when I got this guitar for $300. I really haven't seen too many Les Pauls with p-90's so I might just track one down, take my rig to it and compare.
