Anyone tried a 5AR4 rectifier in a RXJS? I emailed Z a couple of days ago but haven't gotten a reply yet (probably because of the holiday) so I thought I'd check here and see if anyone has any experience with a 5AR4 and a RXJS.

Yep, RX Jr. I saw it called RXJS (junior strength) here too so I figured it meant the same thing. I thought about the increase in voltage going to a 5AR4, an if I do the swap I'll probably check to see where the tubes are running with the increased voltage to be sure they are OK. I just want to see if anyone has first-hand experience before I got to all the trouble. I like the RS Jr OK so far (just got it recently). The cleans are great but it seems a bit loose and splatty when it's overdriven, almost like an amp that's biased too cold. I was thinking maybe a 5AR4 might tighten it up a bit and make it crunch a little smoother when pushed.

I emailed brent recently and he did say a 5ar4 should tighten things up. It does change the overall sound a bit. I had old power tubes when I tried though so I'm going to give it another go. He recommended a new production sovtek. Also he mentioned that they used the 5ar4 in other amps such as the maz jr so the rx jr shouldn't be an issue. And FWIW the RX ES uses a 5ar4 and is advertised to have a tight bottom-end.

Just to follow up, Brent got back to me and I tried the 5AR4 in my Jr. It definitely tightens things up a bit, but it isn't a huge change. I think I still prefer the 5Y3 because to me it's a sweeter clean tone, especially with single coils.
