I haven't played through the stangray yet, but have been told by many people to give it a try before purchasing the Maz 18, but according to many dealers, the Maz is the more versatile amp, and also the best seller. I don't know what to get...I play country, rock, and blues...Any advice? Thanks, Jason

While I would Love to have a Maz 18 someday, The Stangray Is a Mighty Fine Choice for all of your listed styles of playing. The Ray Offers very Chimey Cleans ,Also with the right speaker an OD Pedal in front of it and it will Make most Vintage Marshalls/Vox amps sound Weak! It has a Very nice Broad tonal range. You may ask is 30 watts overkill? You can always play at a lower volume. I think the Stangray is the Best amp offered by DR Z . The Bottom line is, If it says Z on the front of it , It will sound GREAT!!!!! keep us posted of your choice

I've had both.
If you want a clean amp as a base for overdrive pedals...then the Stangray will be great.
If you're looking for some natural overdrive, I'd go with the Maz 18.
The Maz 18 can get into Stangray territory, but the Stangray can't get into Maz 18 territory very well. (this is all without the help of pedals.) I used to put a low gain 5751 tube in V1 of the Maz 18 for lower gain and a cleaner country sound. At lower volumes, it was a like a low watt Stangray. VERY close in tone and feel. If you're going to be playing real loud, that won't work so well.
Both are wonderful amps. I miss them both. But if you are playing different cover tunes...I'd go with the Maz Jr. (if you're not a overdrive pedal type guy)

I do like more of a clean sound, and i am a pedal type of guy, but i've heard the stangray is more for country twangy sound only?

I use a Celstion Gold/Heritage GH 30 setup and use mostly a Timmy and BB preamp OD pedals Stacked, It sounds like a 100 Watt Marshall, I'm not kidding it's that good. Yes it does cleans well, but pushed it gives alot of amps a run for the money. The EF 86 gives it more Umph in my opinion and using an efficient speaker makes it very usable in alot of gig situations. It's my A-Z amp in cover bands I play in. ;D

I hope you didn't jump on board for a piece of the Brooklyn bridge while you were at it! Whoever believes that has never put a Ray head on top of Z Best cab. The Ray can be quite "Rock" if you want it to. I do LOVE my Ray. However, in your situation, where versatility is most important - I'd probably go with the Maz. YMMV.

The Maz is more versitile. For that matter you shouldn't rule out the Maz 38 either. You will have more power if you need it for more headroom as compared to the Maz 18. You will also get the natural overdriven tones of the Maz amps with the 38 by using the master volume. But that just confuses this matter.
Now onto the ray being for country twang. It will do country twang all day long if you want it to, but I have found that backing off the cut will remove some of the jangle. I've been running the cut on mine almost off lately and adding an overdrive pedal to the front. It will really rock. Twang is one of its strong suits, but not its only trick.

I do own both......got the stang ray and it blew me away! It is a great amp...also loud as hell. I put baffles all around my rig got the airbrake and bandmembers still complained it was too loud in small clubs (The tone is to die for though). Sooooo went out and got a maz jr head. Also a great sounding amp.....great cleans, lots of headroom for 18 watts, takes pedals well, Band happy.....i'm happy. I'll never part with either, so Jason you can't go wrong either way.....or get one of each!

He's not kidding--check YouTube; there's a video somewhere of a dude playing METAL through his StangRay (with a pedal, of course), and it sounds great. Really though, Jason, if at all possible, I'd still suggest that you try to play 'em both before buying. I could see either of those amps working out fine for you. I think it'd just come down to personal preference...

Thanks all for your input...I would LOVE to have both, (someday), lol, but as for my 1st Z amp, i want to get the right one. I think i'll go Maz 18 w/reverb head for starters. Now, my next question.....Do i get a 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet? If i go 1x12, i would prob get a G12H30 for more clean sound, but if i go 2x12, i would prob go G12H30 and a Blue. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks!
