I have a reissue gold top Les Paul that originally came with P-100s. I ordered some Fralins and put them in. Then I took it down to a music store where the owner had a 1956 les paul special. We played my guitar for a while and then played his old guitar. He said, and i agreed, that my guitar sounded good but the old guitar was definitely better and it had dead strings! that was about 10 years ago.

You might should try a set of Jason Lollar's P-90's. I replaced the Duncan P-90's in my Mccarty Soapbar with these and they are just killer! Closest thing I've found yet to the vintage P-90 sound.

I have Lollars in a McSoap and in a 40th Anninversary Les Paul. They are great sounding pups. They are very clear and you will hear everything, including some extra noise that I found troublesome at first, but the tone certainly out-weighs any of the noise.

Does your guitar have the Tune-O-Matic/stop tailpiece combo? If your guitar does have the 2pc bridge/tail set up its kinda hard to compare your guitar to a '56 with a wraparound bridge. I like the Fralin P-90's a lot.

I have used a bunch of lollar's pickups and they are the nuts. By that I mean good (d**n spellchecker). Interesting, it turns s**t to nuts... I had a bit more noise with the lollar humbuckers too, he said its the unbalanced windings in the individual coils of the buckers. It apparently is part of why they sound so good.
