The main plus of the "NR" feature on the MAZ 18 is a basically a little more gain. After using the MAZ 8 for a whole year I have to say that the MAZ 8 has Plenty of gain. Being a single ended amp you get much easier access to the power tube grind. As far as pre-amp gain goes you have 2 different flavors in the Pentode/Triode switch and the tone bypass is available on both of those modes. The Maz 8 and Maz 18 have a similar control set but they are quite different amps in my book. As flexible as the Maz 18 the Maz 8 has even more options.

Gotta agree with roscoe, this amp is fine as-is.
I had a Maz18 sans the EQ bypass, probably would have liked it on that amp.
But with the 8, chances are VERY good you don't want or need the NR with the bypass. I can't imagine the gain of a NR with EQ bypass engaged, would think its too much.
To give an example, my 335 straight-in sounds similar to a LP with the EQ bypass. My Tele takes on a humbucker sound with bypass engaged.

I have to say it.. I'm glad I'm not that big on reverb, the reverb in my Maz 8 is... underwhelming to say the least. Love the amp though!
