This is the first time that my Ray has gotten new tubes since I got it. Can someone please tell me whether the V2 position 12AX7 should be of the "balanced triodes" kind - for use as a Phase Inverter tube? thanks a TON - cheers

Yes, it should be balanced...because it IS the PI.

Try a 5751 in the PI or an unbalanced 12AX7 as well.
I prefer the PI to be asymmetric rather then balanced.

Thanks Mark, If the unbalanced P.I. won't harm the amp - what does it change? tom

It just adds some "complexity" by making the positive half of the sine wave and the negative half of the sine wave look a little different.
A "matched' PI will make it look a little more symmetrical.
