I just put in new power tubes in my 'Ray. I figured I had about 200 hours on the old ones ... does anyone else change tubes based on the number of hours the amp is powered up? I know Phil recommends changing power tubes on the SR at 100 hours, any other thoughts on when to change power tubes? I am noticing an improvement in the sound since I changed them.

Howdy,
I change mine when they die, but then again I don't gig anymore!

I don't have any way of gauging hours. I change them when they go or when it clearly doesn't sound right anymore.

I usually go about 6 months to a year depending how much I gig and save the old ones for backup if there not to bad. Sometimes you can see if the plates are starting to get a little cooked.

Gigged my ray for three years straight same tubes the Doc put in them when he shipped.
If I do change them out I'll go with JJ's.

Just finished my first tube change - got a year out of the first set. Only needed a "matched-quad" of JJ's. Found that it shipped from the Doc with a Dario, so I put it back in and saved my NOS Tesla for future use - thanks Doc. Seems easier to find water in the desert than a Dario these days... What a beautiful thing to bring the RAY back on-line after almost a month hiatus (playing the Jaz). Brings me so much joy, this amp is absolutely stunning... just sayin' - cheers y'all

my ray is due for some new PT's also. I used a Matched set of JJ's last time is there any other sweeter sounding tubes that will be worth using? Not complaining about the JJ's . Just wandering if there are other options. Thanks Jamie

The word is the doc is switching to EH 84's. Also heard good things about the TAD's

I should but don't keep track of OT changes. When the mojo starts to go away it's time for a fresh set. I was happy with JJ's but last change Mike at KC Tubes recommended TADs. I'm very happy with them and put them to good use tonight.
