Someone just asked the same question like yesterday. Heck if I can find it though. Word is with all the interest in the Maz 8 the kt66 proto amp won't see light of day until 2012 if at all.

When I spoke with the folks at the shop I was told not before 2012 if it ever does see production. It does sound great though!

This seems cool...but I would rather see the doc just add a Master Volume to the Route 66!

Until there is a decent KT66 in production I would not rush this.

Until there is a decent KT66 in production I would not rush this. Myles, Two questions for you regarding the Gold Lion KT-66 tubes: Your opinion regarding the Gold Lion KT-66 please? It seems like the only viable option now. Is the Gold Lion KT-66 a 25 watt, or a 30 watt tube? You usually say that some KT-66's are 25 watt tubes, and some are 30 watt tubes; and I find no spec on this tube anywhere with this info - do you know which this tube is? Thank you! It's a 30 watt tube. I asked the same question awhile back on page 46 of Ask Myles. ztalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=xperts&action=display&thread=11242&page=46

I ran them as 30 watters just like Myles recommended and had no problems in my Route 66. I ran them at 70% of plate dissipation no matter what rectifier was in there. A little hotter than most seem to like them, but it allowed me to get what I wanted tone wise at a lower volume.

Well then, either they actually are 30 watt tubes, or they are really tough 25 watt tubes - the same bias setting of 70% TPD on a 30 watt tube would equal 85% on a 25 watt tube! Good to know - thanks! Yep. I never had one go bad running them that way. Just read something on here somewhere. Myles is saying they aren't quite the tube they once were or at least something to that affect. If I still had my 66 I'd be looking into that one for sure. Myles would know too. He sees a lot of tubes. DRZ would know for sure also and would be a great source of info on the matter. As long as you have a trustworthy tube vendor you should be fine no matter what the 411 is.

The KT66HP that the Doc originally used was a 30 watt GT tube. Groove Tubes used the max design rating but the design rating was 22 watts with a 30 watt plate max. The original GEC was a 25 watter design rating but 30 watt max rating. 3.5 and 4.5 watts off the screens. Datasheets: www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/Tube/KT66.pdfwww.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/files/Print_KT66HP_-_Jan_2001.pdfThe JJ KT66 looks very much like a adaptation of their KT88 and has the same problems as many current JJ offerings. It does not trace like a GEC KT66. The Sino and Valve Art KT66 tubes have a short life compared to the original GEC. They are also physically fragile. The Sovtek does not impress me sonically and does not trace like a GEC. The "Tung Sol" is an overblown 6L6 in a big bottle. When used in ultra linear applications the screens can fail a bit more quickly than some of the others. Prone to rattle if the amp travels. The re-issue Genelex Gold Lions are pricy in the current production lineup but are the closest to the originals .... for the moment. All of the current production tubes are not recommended by me to any of my folks on tour as they are too fragile for travel on the road. If you do take them on the road keep spares in the bus not in the truck. They do better in a car than a truck. Keep spares in your bunk if on a tour bus. USE the standby switch and give the tubes time to cool down BEFORE you move an amp that has been on stage in use EVEN if the union demands you clear the stage immediately. These tubes do not like quick temperature changes. Hope this was of some help.

Myles Do you think the 5881 tubes would be a better option at this time for a JTM-45 style amp? I was reading good things about the Tung-Sol reissue 5881's so I retubed my JTM-45RI with them. That's what Marshall recommends for my amp. I know they are not like the originals, but I think they sound really nice. The original tubes in my amp were Sovtex 5881's. Not bad, but not great either. How much different are the 5881's vs the KT66's?

So now that the Maz 8 is out, will this unit see the light of day?

A kind word of thanks for sharing your expert knowledge on current production KT-66. I share your disappointment. -Rick

If it helps to speed things along, being a local boy and all, the Doc could send me a kt66 powered prototype to help BetaTest... I would be willing to do that!

I'd be interested to hear the Doc's or Myles' take on the Black treasure shuguang!!! I just saw those over at thetubestore.com I thought the same thing... they've sure got the price that would indicate something special. Whether that is true or not is another thing...

I'd be interested to hear the Doc's or Myles' take on the Black treasure shuguang!!! I'll see of my friends at the Tubestore would send me a couple of set's. I have been happy with the Golden Lions, that BTW is what is in the proto-type. But I'm always up for something new and improved. DR.Z
