Is there anything I can do to get more clean headroom? Pre amp tube change? Recommendations? It's hard to get usable clean at band volumes I loveee love this amp though. My first amp was a Bluesbreaker, and all the amps I've owned since then I've compared to it, and this is the only one that I've loved immediately just as much as the BB. Just need more clean

12at7 (40% less gain) or a 12ay7 (55% less gain) in the phase inverter (v2). I don't know of any lower gain ef86's. SS rectifier might help as well with a rebias.
I feel your pain, I've been fighting the same thing with the Stang Ray.
Good luck rp

Like others have said, a rectifier change to a 5AR4 will help a lot. Then if that is not enough, I would certainly try the 12at7 or ay7 in the phase inverter position.
Tis a beautiful amp.

NOS 5AR4 NOS GE 5751 Wh@ speaker you using? Something more efficient than you currently have will help immensely. Also go with a 2x12 or 4x12 rather than a 1x12.

With that said, one needs to remember that the Route 66 is a 'thick', 'fat', 'smokey' & 'smooth' sounding amp. And, of course, that is what we love so much about it! I definitely agree! I LOVE the tone. I've had a few Bluesbreakers - and that was my favorite tone and this is very similar and love it. It's just been hard getting usable clean at band volume levels. I'll try the 5AR4 - seems to be the popular choice.

Like doc001 asked, what's your current speaker set up?

At 100db each of the V30s are fairly efficient. Eminence has some speakers at 102-103db in their Patriot/Redcoat series that you could check out.
Someone mentioned earlier about your bias. Could be the tubes have drifted a bit, especially if they have been in there awhile. It would be worth taking a look see to make sure that the output tubes are not biased too hot or cold. That would probably be the first thing I would check as it's cheaper than new speakers.

I think the only solution is running two or more Route 66's and lower your guitar volume knob when you want to clean up.

DC here! 1) Running two Route66 in tandem ;D 2) More efficient speakers 3) A different PI-tube a 5751 tube. 4) 5AR4 rectifier tube Cheers: Dixiechicken!

I can only assume it would be great in the 66 as well!

Personally, when I had my Route 66...I thought V30 speakers were awful with it. It's a mid heavy amp, and the V30 is a mid heavy speaker. I didn't like them together. But if it's the tone you're going for, then it's the right one for you. And as said above....they're pretty loud speakers.
