Has anybody used a Celestion Gold 12 with their 6545? I've got a chance to get one from a friend and use it along with my ZBest - or just by itself. Already have a cab with a V30 in it - I think the gold would be a big upgrade in tone. Thoughts??

I just read that the Golds aren't great in closed back cabs....has anyone tried it...is it a definite no-no, or would it still be better than a v30 or g12h30??

I've tried a gold in a 1X12 open back cab (keeping the master down of course so as not to fry the speaker). It was decent (better on the 45 side than the 65 side), but not really my cup 'o tea.
The 65 side is more in the marshall camp, and when chasing marshall-esque tones, you gotta go with a ceramic magnet speaker IMO. The gold has quite a bit of low end, but it's not the tight, punchy low end of a ceramic magnet, it's the compressed alnico type, so it's not really the best combination with the 65 side. It sounds a little better to me on the 45 side, but I'd still rather use a ceramic speaker with the 6545. The G12-65 or a pair of greens are my prefered setup with the 6545.
