I've got a Maz18 jr NR 2x10 combo amp that I love. I've noticed in the last few months that there's a ringing/vibration sound coming from it. I know it's not in my head because a fellow musician said he hears it and he said "it sounds like a tambourine sitting on the amp but faint" which is a perfect way of describing the sound. I've not noticed any tone or volume problems. Any ideas what it could be or how I should start troubleshooting?

it could be tube rattle...kinda sounds like a tambourine...el84's are notorious for tube rattle

My 1x12 combo developed a similar rattle a few months ago.
I replaced every single tube, tried dampers, tightened every screw inside the chassis and it's unfortunately still there.
The strange part is that lightly holding the *transformer* will typically make the rattle go away. Shimming the transformer fixes the rattle at low volumes but the rattle unfortunately comes back if I turn it up a bit.
It's driving me nuts as I love the amp but the rattle is *loud* and I can't get rid of it.

If you tried dampers then you must have removed the metal tube protectors correct. If you haven't you might try removing them and see if one of them could be the issue.
I actually have a tambourine in my music room, i mention this not to state the obvious, because the rattle/vibration is probably coming from the amp, but i would take the amp into another room and check it there. I once chased a noise/vibration that was coming from a harmonic vibration from an item i had in the music room. Also what is the amp setting on?
These maybe long-shoots, but i would check them out, anything not to have to ship off the amp.

Move the amp away from the wall too. Sometimes the sound reflection from a nearby wall can cause this.

The rattle is definitely coming from the chassis but I'll check it out in another room to see if the amp behaves better there. Re: settings, the rattle typically starts as soon as I go past 7PM on the Volume with the Master at 10AM, only when I play certain notes.

I noticed a few months ago that the distance from the wall makes a big difference in the way amps with open cabs sound. The Maz that's rattling is ~20 inches away from the back wall. I'm going to move it to another room to see if anything changes.

Also if you got it used check the handle covers and screws.

Hello everyone. Quick update:
I bought two Sorber baffles from Clearsonic and placed them behind the Maz. This eliminated or at least greatly reduced the rattling sound.
It appears the reflection from the back wall, which is 20" behind the amp, was exacerbating the problem.
Do many / any of you have rattles when you place the amp 1-3 feet from a wall?

Bumping this thread as I too am experiencing this crazy rattle...I replaced ALL tubes (rattle was there prior to tube change), tightened all screws, bolts, removed tube shields etc...nothing will make this rattle go away...and it does sound just like a tambourine inside my amp. You tap the cab anywhere and it will produce this noise. I will try to get some video of it so you can hear and see what I am faced with.

Bummer- I've had the same thing happen. You might still be able to use the one that rattles by putting a pair of rubber o-rings on it. That might get rid of it.

Here's the culprit...it's a bummer for sure. I was really looking forward to these tubes. I didn't even suspect it as there was a similar noise in the amp that just developed before I changed out all the tubes...so this morning, I got out my trusty pencil and sure enough. this little fella is no good. If anyone has a spare 6n14n for sale, let me know...Frank explained to me that there's a "reflector" 6n14n that comes in the new Z's...would like one of those. Looks like this good one that I have. Not sure the rating on it...but 22 was the common factor that was on the box the tubes came in.

Hi Mark. I highly recommend forum member Perry R. Here's his Reverb Store I bought a selection of 6n14n output tubes from him. I'm pretty sure these are the same tubes that come stock in Dr. Z El84 amps. These are great sounding tubes. Here's a link : 6n14n / EL84 His prices are very reasonable, and he packs well and ships promptly. His tubes are all tested and rated for transconductance. I'm really happy with the tubes I've bought from Perry.

Yeah, I'll likely hit Perry up. I just want to say a HUGE thanks to fallinstarsusa, the fellow I bought these from here on Z Talk bst. He refunded half the purchase because of the bad tube. Very much appreciated! Mark is a class act. Thank you!!!
