Hey fellas, Long time Canadian member/site surfer, 1st time poster...and I need a little guidance...
My 1st question: Yesterday I picked up a 2001 Version 1 Mazerati head for a great price, and I just want to check with some of you technical guys "in the know" about proper re-tubing (want to make sure it's back to a "stock" tube arrangement), so it's running it's best. But I seem to be finding a lot of conflicting information....
The current tube arrangement when I got it is as follows: V1: EH 12AX7 V2: GT 12AX7 Output: 4 JJ EL-84 Recto: JJ GZ34S
According to the "Discontinued" section of the Dr.Z website, the stock V1 position is supposed to be a 5751, and the stock recto tube is suppose to be a 5AR4...or is this tube chart on the website referring to the discontinued Version 2 Mazerati only???
Can anyone tell me what the original tube arrangement is for a 2001 V1 Mazerati head?....
My second question is (please excuse the ignorance): I've never known what the "tall light blue cylinder" behind the output tubes is. Most if not all Dr.Z heads I've seen have the same vital component. Mine however, is a shorter black cylinder. On the side is printed: 32 X 32 uF 500V
I have a sinking feeling this is not stock! Is this an improper or incompatible component that could continuously damage the amp?...Good or bad?....HELP!!!
Grateful for any assistance or info I can get, Thanks
Fuzztone

That's a filter cap. Most are blue or black depending on manufacturer.

My V1 has a light blue filter cap it's stock. In mine now I have 4xTAD EL84's, 1xRCA 5AR4, 1x5751 GE five star, and finally 1xTung-Sol 12ax7. This is stock except for the brand. Running two 12ax7's is similar to the GT and you'll go through power tubes faster but no harm will come to the amp. Use whatever brand of tubes you like. I find that NOS rectifiers have worked best for me. YMMV. Congrats on the the new Rati and welcome to Z-Talk...8) Lay some pics on us, don't see many V1's 'round these parts.

Thanks for the help & suggestions, fellas...
Anyone know where I can get a new wire-mesh back panel for the same V1 Mazerati head? When I got it, it looks like the back of the amp took a minor hit at some point, and it has a bend in it. (I'm also gonna need 4 new back panel screw & washers)...
Contacted Dr.Z last week, but haven't heard anything yet. Does the doc even sell replacement parts?....anything aftermarket?...

Welcome to the Z Tribe.
V1 is your tone stack. V2 is your PI (phase inverter). They will take most any pre-amp tube in the 12AX7'ish persuasion. There are dozens of different pre-amp tube spec flavors that can be used in V1 and V2. The short explanation is that the specifications for a 12AX7 calls for more signal gain (100 mu) than a 5751 (70 mu). V1 will have the most effect on your tone but everything contributes to the whole. Many people like a 5751 for the PI because it is spec'd to be balanced (both triodes) and will generally produce a "smoother" tone with less gain. Similarly, a GZ32 (aka 5V4) produces a little less output than a 5AR4 (aka GZ34). See the "Z on Tube Rectifiers..." sticky post in the tubes section for discussion about this.
In other words, "stock" is relative and tone is a journey.
