Wanted to know if they would play nice together... I've got a couple NOS 5v4 tubes here, and was wondering if they would have enough current carrying capacity for those big KT 66s. Wanting some sag when my amp comes in.

They will play very nicely indeed. Much more sag w/ some tweed like characteristics. Remember the 5V4 will lower the plate voltage. So a rebias will be in store. The 66 will ooze great tone by the gobs w/ a proper bias when using a 5V4. Happy testing to you

I know this is old thread, but been conversing with prspastor about similar matter of rectifier swap in my newly acquired used Route 66. I am told it had all original stock tubes which for the recto was a GT 5AR4. I just swapped it for a NOS RCA 5V4GA. No re-bias yet, but it is all spongy & gooey now (in a good way). I also believe less headroom, volume. That's all good for me too. I'd like to know more about the rest of the tubes if anyone can enlighten me. KT66 are GT, EF84 is AEL.
I LOVE THIS AMP!!!

AEL EF86 is a rebranded Mullard. The Doc explains in an old thread (somewhere around here) that he scored 200 or them. I have one that came in my 2008 (20th anniversary) Z28.

I *think* that those GT KT66 are Shuguang tubes (Chinese). I think that most folks feel that they are good tubes. I could be wrong though... my memory... I'd say that when time comes for a change, you would be best served by Gold Lions (reissue). Those are the stock tubes that come in Route 66 now.
I think

a 5A4 will provide the same voltage as a 5U4 but with 1 amp less current draw. The 3 amp draw can be a problem with some power transformers, but doc's are sturdy enough (by a long shot) to handle the 5U4. The 5VR renders slightly lower voltage. I was able to bias my R66 with a 5U4 but it was at the very bottom of the pot's range. The 5Vr maybe more of a challenge requiring a resistor change.
Edit: better data - thanks Albert.
