Have been listening to the clips on the Z website so when one popped up at a Guitar Center by me I decided to try it out and I must say this amp impresses me it is thick and the sustain is fantastic it makes my Z28 sound a little thin with the controls on both set at noon. I really like the 4x10 cab the best (2 Z speakers 1 weber blue ceramic 1 weber silver alnico)my old rectangular 2x10 cab with golds and my old rectangular1x12 with Gold tie for second but they really shine also to me this amp is not dark I tried it at GC with an Egnater 2x12 loaded with celestion speakers and it sounded great there also..looks like a keeper to me and they gave me 12 months to pay it off !!!

Great amp. You made a very good purchase.
Some different tube choices can darken or lighten the tone. Speakers make a big difference as well.

Howdy, Sounds like you got yourself a good financing deal on a mucho fun amp! Please post your tone observations & recipes. PS: I've got to stay out of the Route 66 section; I can't afford to surrender to the GAS.

Tube choices make a HUGE difference in the Route 66, especially V1.
Also the pre-year 2000 "lower filtered" 66's are darker and smokier.

I do have to agree with the OP, my Route is not dark per se, but rich and thick. It is difficult to describe, but *thick* is the best description I can come up with.

DC here! I too agree in the description thick - Besides the only times I need to cut the bass on the Route66 is with PAF humbauckers. (thats when somebody else is borrowing my rig - ;D) Cheers: Dixiechicken!

I equate the tone of the 66 like having a Guinness instead of a lite beer. Enjoy !!

Agree that the Gold Lions seemed to brighten it up for me along with a RC Booster. As much as I don't need all the power that it has, the Route 66 is such a unique and great sounding amp that I could never sell it. Gonna pass it along to one of the kids. I think it will ultimately be one of the Docs defining amplfiers. I think it is really that good.

Love the Route 66! The THICK tone, sustain, simplicity of 3-knobs. Can play at low volumes or as loud as one could stand. Monster with my LP & just a bad-a*** with my tele. Just tried it out on my 1x12 Creamback which to me is a great match up! I like at least as much as I did the gold. The Creamback seams to have a way with the complex overtones the Route creates.

I heard Nigel's (aka Rick) in person this weekend and it did not sound very dark to me. It did sound awesome and the dude has some licks;)
We also plugged in my Z28 to compare and they were actually closer in tone than I thought. The Rt 66 did have a slightly thicker tone. Great sounding amp!

Speakers make a huge difference with the RT 66. Love it with the 4x10 cab.

In the Gearmandude review of the Z-28, it seemed to need to have the treble all the way up or sound really dark. If that is the case, then many amps will sound brighter.
